I just bought myself an ASUS K70AB. 17.3" screen. 1600x900 native resolution. ATI Radeon Mobility 4580. 4 gigs of RAM and a AMD Turion processor. Pretty capable gaming machine. Run 2142 with most settings on medium at native resolution. Ran BF2 at native resolution on high, although I turned off Anti Aliasing. The source games all ran at native resolution with everything dialed up pretty high. Laptop was under $700 at Newegg.

Re: Laptops
I see tons of HPs come back for repair compared to other manufacturers. ASUS might have bad customer support, but you shouldn't need to contact them. I have had one experience with customer support and it was for a manufacturer defect on a mobo I bought. It was resolved rather quickly and painlessly.
I just picked up an ASUS 17" G71 and it kicks ass.

I hear ya about HP. I was hesitant to buy my dv5t, until I read the reviews. Tons of reviewers made notice that HP build quaility has increased from 2 years ago. Some even put it above Dell's Inspirion and Stuido series... on par with the XPS, yet superior in terms of styling (Dell's were getting outdated).
Some of the ASUS notebooks that have been coming out have been looking quite similar to HPs. I even read an article that mentioned how many of the less popular notebook companies (such as ASUS) have started to copy the styling of HP. To each his own, I suppose.
I just suggest you wait for an HP or Dell coupon code and order your notebook directly from them. I got mine for 25% off once you spend over $899. My starting price was $599, so I upgraded the screen, the video card, the hard drive, the battery, and the memory, bringing the price to about $1200, minus 25% brought it back down to $900 plus tax, with free shipping.
Dell has similar deals from time to time... these coupon codes really make them deal brakers in regards to price/performance.

Yea... gaming laptops are generally... expensive. I guess the question is, do you really need a gaming book on par with the latest desktops (or slightly below)? Are you going to use this for other things, such as work, school, etc?
Here is a coupon for a Dell Studio XPS. 25% off. You can config the notebook however you want. The Studio XPS 16 looks pretty cool.
http://www.notebookreview.com/dellCoupon2.asp
I just did a custom config on a Dell Studio XPS 16:
SYSTEM COLOR Obsidian Black High Gloss Finish edit
PROCESSOR Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T9600 (6MB cache/2.8GHz/1066Mhz FSB) edit
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition SP1, 64-bit edit
WARRANTY AND SERVICE 2Yr Ltd Hardware Warranty, InHome Service after Remote Diagnosis edit
HD DISPLAY Edge-to-Edge FullHD Widescreen 16.0 inch RGBLED LCD (1920x1080) W/2.0 MP edit
MEMORY 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1067MHz (2 Dimms) edit
HARD DRIVE 500GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive edit
INTERNAL OPTICAL DRIVE BluRay Disc Combo (DVD/CD read/write + BD read) Slot Load Drive edit
VIDEO CARD ATI Mobility RADEON™ HD 4670 – 1GB edit
WIRELESS CARDS Intel® 5100 WLAN Wireless-N (1x2) Half Mini Card edit
BATTERY Additional 9-Cell Battery edit
SOUND OPTIONS High Definition Audio 2.0
I chose the upgraded CPU, 4GB memory, upgraded video card, BluRay... brought the price up a bit. Using the link with the coupon, this notebook came out to $1731, plus tax, with free shipping. Not bad for a pretty powerful notebook.

Not that fastest or most expensive but should do everything you want to do and be somewhat snappy at it. Wont support 1980x1080 but other than that should be just what you need.
