If you were going to build a new PC and you had $1000 to do it with

    Hey all

I know I haven't been around at all since Quakecon ended but that is about to change. I've been saving money for building a new box and the time has finally come to start buying the pieces. My question to you all is. If you were going to buy a new processor, motherboard, and graphics card which ones would you get?

Keep in mind that I want to keep the price around $1000 including the hard drive, ram, etc.

    Something like this:
    http://techreport.com/articles.x/17571/4

    Processor Intel Core i5-750 $206.99
    Motherboard Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3R $139.99
    Memory Crucial 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3-1333 $73.99
    Graphics Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 1GB $154.99
Storage Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB $74.99
    Samsung SH-S223B $30.99
    Audio Asus Xonar DX $89.99
Enclosure Antec Sonata III w/500W PSU $109.99
Total Buy this complete system at Newegg $881.92

You can add or subtract a bit from there, but that machine would be a powerhouse.

You know, I was about to recommend an i7-920 like I always do, but damn if that i5-750 doesn't perform well after looking up reviews. The end of the Anandtech article reviewing that chip had a good summary of the few benefits for still going 1366 over 1156:

    1) High-end multi-GPU Performance
    2) Stock Voltage Overclocking
    3) Future support for 6-core Gulftown CPUs

Other than that though, that 1156 platform looks like a good economic way to build a fast system.

meh, 1000 bucks gets you a pretty damn powerful system that can push a 22 inch monitor without much trouble at all. the cost of performance in PC land is dropping like a rock, what cost 2500 a few years back is a 1000 dollar PC today

Correct. The same thing has happened with TV's and cameras and a lot of other small electronics over the past few years. Life is good. 8) $1000 is plenty for literally a top of the line powerhouse, not counting peripherals.

I was going to say almost the same thing.
I just speced out almost that exact system for my wife's new rig. About the only thing I changed was mobo brands and I went with 8 GB RAM and less vidcard since she does not game. The Core i5 just made life difficult for AMD.

    I don't get the i5 craze.

Search any of my threads for my last build.

    i7 920
    6 GB triple channel Ram
    X58 MOBO
    4980 1 GB card
    700 Watt PSU
    CASE
    COOLER

Mine is runnign at 3.33 GHZ without a hiccup.
