Fun night with XP Install DVDs?!
So to make a long story short, had a teacher who ended up making his class (of 4 people) install a program which also contained a virus. Annoying, but hes the only teacher i like so, bleh. Been meaning to reinstall xp anyways. On a short note, got quite, quite, QUITE a well written pack of virus's. The end result, my system, actually blocks (via security policies and a few other things) all anti-virus, cleanup, w/e the fuck you-can-think-of-to-remove-these-files. I mean EVERYTHING from hijack this, to ccleaner, to EVERYTHING. Long story short, ended up making the mistake of applying a Microsoft crafted Policy fix-me pack. Which, of course, did not fix anything, infact, it made things worse! This xp install now boots (safemode, console, and normal) into the good ol' blackscreen-n-cursor.
If you know me, you will know that I religiously backup (complete+diff) everything except my os's (because i have that many installed, and i just dont find reinstalling a os to be that big of a pain).
Now, to get down to the interesting shit. The last time i reinstalled i had been reading up on slipstreaming and some well... things you normally wouldnt attribute to a windows install session! Let me elaborate, full drivers for all my hardware; fully updated windows installation (ex sp3 for xp); favorite apps, preinstalled (was very tricky) including old settings (registry settings, app and local settings, ex vent users and servers, ftp programs' settings, outlook email accounts, etc-etc)! This install set, is a hair short of a ghosted image! But, its better! Its a fresh, squeaky clean install of windows, not a restoration! But wait, theres more! Its a fully-automated install! Yup, thats right, it goes through and automatically filles out all the annoying ass bs, handles the dialog windows that will hang a install if you dont click yes, and quite litterally does everything (aside from inserting dvd's) after you insert the first install dvd, to the final reboot into your desktop, ready to go!
Even executes commands before the final reboot. I use these to execute bat's which copy over overything from my backups' that i did not deem essential, or too large to try fitting on dvd's! Simply beautiful! Havent tried a network install (single dvd, +the rest on a network location, so you dont have to deal with inserting the dvd's if you have a lot in the install set and can just go read a book and come back to a completed install)
Final thoughts: Id never thought id actually want to or would have fun (for that matter) bringing out the xp install dvd's, but alas, things have changed with a little elbow grease!
Though, i will be re-reinstalling, few things didnt execute right during the install, so being the perfectionist that i am, Ive corrected them in the setup files and am reburning them as we speak to give it another go.
Edit: About done burning, when im back on later i might post a how-to for this. Going to go watch a movie while my computer does all the hard work for me :9

Re: Fun night with XP Install DVDs?!
that is how I build my images for work. XPpro SP3 slip streamed with all updates to SP3. Burned to a single DVD. I also have it on a bootable flash drive and external HD. Have three other DVDs that have all my other software, slipstream silent install of office 2007, visio 2007 and project 2007 on one DVD. Makes like much easier and since I build images for a living anything that saves me time gives me more time for other projects. The latest iteration of my ghosting technology is bootable 320GB harddrives that hold 20 or so images for different model dells that is bootable using imagex boot technology. Boots into a GUI where I can launch antivirus, file explorer, ghost 11.5 or imagex. Takes about 6-7 minutes to load a fresh image on a dell optiplex 760. We no longer clean viruses. It's easier to move their files to the 320GB HD, blast it and move their stuff back. Best part is a synch program I have installed on the HD that automatically checks the image server for any updates and uploads them when it's plugged in to a workstation on the domain.

Re: Fun night with XP Install DVDs?!
I stick with Linux. Ubuntu to be specific.
Never gives me any problems.
I used windows growing up, and I have always had an overwhelming feeling that I was slowly getting fucked by the os. So, I started to use Ubuntu, and the feeling has vanished.
I am soon going to use a dual-boot system though. I am going to install Windows 7 on an ubuntu system I have, because I am some what satisfied with Windows 7, it feels like the first version of windows that is actually satisfying.

Bunni, look for an article by Rumble very soon regarding gaming on win 7. Its sitting in the contributors forum right now actually. That may solve some of your angst. http://www.texasteamplayers.com/index.php?topic=74237.0 (note, the contents of this link are in a private forum but will soon be made public once the article in question is published :2)
