Thread: Gfx Problem?

Lately I have run into a number of different problems while playing TF2.

This is the first one, which results in my screen going black and and usually going to desktop and then me going back into TF2 np.


And then this one, which shows up red in my console and acts like a huge lag spike. I am not using wireless though, so I dont think it could be a lag spike.

Yesterday I decided I had enough and did a little research on both and found nothing. So I figured I would try some basic things to try and help it. I first defraged the TF2 files and I then verified their cache? I dont know what either fo these do, but I tried it anyways. Doing those only seem to make the problem worse, I went from playing all the time (with those occasional problems), to not being able to play for more than a minute without extreme tearing and a crash or just a straight blue screen crash and restart. I did a system restore for 2 days ago and it didn't fix anything. I tried CS and that tore as well and crashed. And now my rig seems very unstable altogether. I have gotten the image above when I was just starting Windows and I have gotten what seems like a little tearing when just loading up my OS. I uninstalled TF2 and tried again, but still nothing.

I run Vista 64-bit, with 4 gigs of ram, a Q6600, and a 8800 GTS. I have had this setup for about a year and a half and have had 0 problems until now. I will also add that my mobo doesn't have an on board gfx card.

So what do you guys think? Is there a way test if my card is actually shot, should I try a reformat or do I just need to bite the bullet and get a new card?

I have a "spare" nVidia 8800 GTS 320. I air-quote the "spare" because my wife has been on my ass to get it listed on eBay. Need Christmas money for the kids!
