Re: Laptop Screen Dead - Help me Build Desktop
Come to think of it, that heatsink does not have fittings for the i7 socket. Mistake on my part!
It looks like you would also need to purchase this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835233038
These are the fittings for that socket. I have used that heatsink with the Antec so I can confirm that it fits.

Any idea what size PSU i would need to get to run this build? Am I looking at 600w+ pretty much? Especially if crossfire comes in down the road . . .

Re: Laptop Screen Dead - Help me Build Desktop
something like a Corsair TX750W PSU should work. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ir%20TX%20750W
Though you might want to look at a 850 watt verison for a bit more furture proofing incase you want to plug a second GPU and upgrade the CPU down the road.(there also is a 850 version too)
I endorse the Vectus build though its pretty much a copy of what I'm planning to do this spring as a "yay I survived another year of school" present to myself and sell of my current rig. Though by then the 5850's/5870's should have come down a bit in price so I probably going to get one of those.
I can't wait to play with the I7 920 CPU's and OC them to hell and back again. My old E6600 is running a 3.40 quite happily(though its got a nice Zalman 9700 fan strapped on it, its a bitch to clean though).
anyways have fun with the new comp and tell me what its like.

Re: Laptop Screen Dead - Help me Build Desktop
Thanks for showing me that great deal on the PSU Raptor. I really like the looks of it, it has incredibly good reviews and meets all of my needs (as far as I know). So I'm pretty well sold on that as long as it is meeting all my needs.
I was doing some more looking around this afternoon and found what appears to be a pretty good monitor for a great price.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824236032
The only thing I'm concerned about is the 1680x1050 resolution, is that common at all? I don't recognize it. Not quite 1080p but it's certainly better than the 1440x900 that so many other monitors run.
I also did some searching for a different HDD seeing as the current one Vectus recommended is out of stock. I found this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136073
It looks pretty good to me, 7200 RPM and 16mb cache. Just hoping someone else can confirm that the company is good and that this thing won't die on me in a years time.
Thoughts and suggestions?

Re: Laptop Screen Dead - Help me Build Desktop
Myself i bought a 21in Samsung a few years ago when Memoryexpress was cleaning out their old inventory of monitors with 2MS lag time thats runs 1680x1050 for about $178cad (yea I'm Canadian) and at that time it would have been about S120ish (maybe S100) US.
As for my understanding in the last 3 years overall power consumption of computers has gone down due to the use of smaller and smaller chips(mainly GPU's and CPU's). And right now I'm running an old OCZ coolmax 850watt PSU with 80 amps on the 12v rails and yours has as much as mine does right now. There is a deal on the 850 watt version as well and its $139($199 with mail in) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139009 and is running 70 amps on the 12v rail. Either way AFAIK either one should be fine. Tech has come quite aways from the power mad Core2Duo's and 8800 GTX's. If you plan on Crossfiring GPU's I'd take the 850 just to be safe.
As for HD's I use WD myself (Velociraptor 150 GB, really if I get more than 100gb I can toss stuff off my HD or off load to my DVD RW's so I really don't need bigger HD's.) If your HD tanks their replacement policy is really nice. They will do and Advance RMA and ship you the new HD and then you have 30days+a few to get yours too them so you can have as little as 3 days(I've done 2 with them one for me and one for a friend) without an HD. As for Samsung I have head good things about them though I can't say I have any experience with them. Also WD has a customer policy where if you buy a new HD from them and have owned a previous one they will cut you a deal. Though i can't remember off the top of my head how much they cut the price down. I don't know of Samsung does the same. The WD looks a tad slower on the spec's side but not enough to really care about imho.
If it comes to it flip a coin

Haha the old flip a coin method always works right?
I think the 750 watt power supply will be enough. I was just looking at some benchmark reviews of the 5770 and it draws amazingly little power. A single card is only drawing 22W when it's idle and a maxes out at 115W under a full load. ATI has done really well at bringing the power consumption down.

Even with THREE 5770's in crossfire the reviewer says a 750W Corsair power supply was enough to do all the benchmark testing they needed. The three cards together used 77W when idle and 388W when at a full load. So i really think the power supply I am looking at is more than enough (which is exactly what I want)

Re: Laptop Screen Dead - Help me Build Desktop
Ok check this out, I was showing my friend all this computer stuff at work today and he tells me to check out this store near DC that he gets tech stuff from. This is the i7 processor that I was planning on buying from Newegg
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...hermal%20Paste
This is the one that he showed me from Micro Center:
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0302727
So my question is: are these the exact same processor?
I'm almost 100% sure that they are, i just want somebody else to verify it.
Both are 1336 socket and have the same specs as far as I can tell.
Did I manage to save $89 on my processor?
