Love my ASUS laptop. I was looking more for a luggable desktop replacement (I needed the horsepower and at the time wasn't available in smaller form factor), but they have some nice smaller models now.
The UL series (with hybrid graphics, embedded Intel for 2D and an nVidia G210M for 3D) are nice.

The N series is also nice:

The G series is also nice, but a little more than your budget:

I bought a K series (K70AB) laptop and got a nicely powered AMD-powered solution for about $600. It's a 17" notebook and not practical to lug around on a day to day basis. For travel it's not bad because it's a decent gaming platform (I can play any game TTP hosts at native resolution at medium to high detail) and it's nice for watching movies and whatnot. I just wouldn't lug it around with me...
If I were making a purchase now, I'd likely go with the UL series. The UL series gets really good battery life and can ramp up performance when working off of a power adapter.

I would recommend just getting a cheap netbook so you have something easily portable that you don't have to worry too much about. Especially with a degree in something that does not require you to run any CPU intensive programs, you wont really be needing even a moderately powerful machine.

14" and <5 lbs imo. Anything larger defeats the purpose of a laptop. I used to have a 17" and the first week it was cool, then it was terrible.
I've got a dell studio 14z and its great. Fast, light, great battery life.

Re: Laptop suggestions?
Alright so I spoke to my mom, and she said she wouldn't go higher than 700$ on a laptop as a graduation gift.
She said to look at Dell Mini's, are they worth it? They have pretty small screens, around 10", but they are only around 300$...but I'll take a look at a few of the 15.4" HP laptops. Thanks for the help so far guys.

Yeah you made me look up a review for it...doesn't look too promising performance wise.
