    Soundcards and Win 7 (64)

I am in the market to buy a soundcard. But I am seeing a lot of issues with the cards that are out now and Win 7 especially 64-bit.
Anyone have any advice on what cards to get?

I can not have a PCI express x1 because of my mobo layout. Regular PCI is fine.
    And it must be 5.1 or 7.1, 16 Bit+ (24 preferred).

Oh this will be for gaming 90% of the time and movies the rest.
I rarely do sound editing/composing any more.

You can go the Creative route... or the non-Creative route. Just a FYI... you can use any PCI-E x1 card in any other PCI-E slot...

The Creative route, you can go with the X-Fi Extreme Gamer. Available in PCI

The non-Creative route, you can go with ASUS Xonar or bGears, or any of the others... ASUS makes both PCI & PCI-E versions of their Sonar cards... the 'X' in the name designates PCI Express.

I've only used the bGears card in my machine, but I'm tempted to get an PCI-E Xonar.

I've just been using onboard. I've never bought a soundcard, just some badass headphones.

Here is something that you might want to consider....when you use a soundcard it also tasks the system more to run than using the onboard audio. I proved this a couple of years ago when I questioned it. I had the nice creative 5.1 dolby sound card and showed the system performed better without it. So my recommendation is to use onboard Audio...and now days you get just as good sound using it as well.

The reason I want a card is I get some crackling on my onboard. I get it when the processer is under load and when I move the mouse and a few other random times.

I use a SB Xtremegamer (PCI) and also hear the crackling but only when I use my headset with the front panel connectors. I've always chocked it up to crappy grounding. When I plug my headset into the back... noise gone.
