    Re: Powerline Networking

I bought the following when they had it for $99 + Free S/H last week. Hooked it up Friday and am getting 23 MBS upstairs (25 MBS down at the router). Hookup was easy and no configuring. I am extrememly pleased so far.

    200 MBS Netgear Powerline.

Im getting a little sick and tired of my wireless set up with my gaming computer, so I think I may be going this route as well. How old is the wiring in your house? The outlet that you have the computer hooked up to with the networking, how many plugs do you have going into it? I have quite a few, and if I get another plug, I think I need to go to a different outlet for fear of overloading the outlet. The movie on that page shows one version of how the unit looks, yet the SS at the end of the movie looks different. Which is more accurate to what you have? Also, are these units capable of having different speed units? Like 1 200 and 2 85s, or 2 200s and 1 85, etc. ? Or does it work better if they are all the same speed? I take you would need to buy 2 minimum (1 for the router and 1 for the computer in question) right?

Thanks for finding out this product. It answered a lot of my previous questions about this sort of set up.

    Re: Powerline Networking

The one that I bought comes with 2 of the same connectors that go into each wall outlet. They are both the EXACT same unit (I believe they send and receive the same). Our wiring is 10 years old but don't think that electrical wiring has changed much in the last 30 years. I think that it depends mostly on the builder and how the electrician set up the house. I haev read reviews of people with new houses working the same as 60 year old wiring.

I have my entire computer powerstrip going through this and no problems. I do think that it gets "goofy" if you plug this into a power strip so it may fry if you get hit by lightning.

I have no problems so far but it has only been a week. My speedtest went from 1.5 MB wireless to 23 MB the second I plugged it in.

I would stick with the same model and speed if you were to add another. You might be able to have a 200MB at the router and 85s at the ends but I am not sure. Might want to check with Netgear before you purchase.

the units are the same except one is set to send the other to receive. There should be a switch on the side and by default one is set to send. Some of them are controlled with software. They also have routers that you can put a send unit on the cable modem side and a router receiver on the other end and plug multiple items into it. That is how I had my living room before I ran cat 5e. I had my ps3, HDDVR, and HTPC all connected to the router receiver in the living room and the power plug transmitter in the computer room plug in. You are better off getting them all the same type and speed. If you do they will all work without configuring them. You can do fancy stuff if you program them. Set up as vlans etc so the circuit to the back bedroom is on a different frequency channel then the one to the living room etc. I wouldn't mix and match, especially between brands.

sorry my unit doesn't say send and receive, one is set to master the other is set to slave..you can have like 5 or 6 slaves to each master.

Mine don't have master or slave they just forward the signal from my router to other units. It is basically just using the elec line as a strainght cord. I haven't broken out the software yet as it is already fast enough.

    Re: Powerline Networking

So Im better off keeping it all the same speed and same brand/manufacturer. Good to know. Chances are, I would have this set up in its own outlet and stuff. Since I need 3 of them, I was thinking of going with this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833122233 and this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833122359. Not exactly the same model, but its still very close.

This is why I love TTP...we can all help each other out with suggestions and problems like this Thanks a lot guys, you have been a big help.
    Code:
      ____ U ___ u _____ U _____ u __ __ ____ _ __ _ _ U _____ u

Can't guarantee they would all work togehter but at first glance looks good to go...

Worst case they suck and you have to RMA...Newegg is pretty good at that. Make sure you buy through the TTP links (as always). Might have restocking fees but I have never had to pay them at NEGG.

Oh yeah, I would totally go through TTP's link. Hell, I just bought components for a $1800 computer plus a $200 monitor through newegg!! I use it for everything and have had to RMA a couple things and they are VERY good about it. I love them.

Thanks for your input FAW. Hopefully this can help give HeavyG ideas.

Post up once you get it installed. I really think this is the way I will be going, and I want to get it soon as the wireless is just terrible for streaming video from my server to my HTPC boxes.
