Anandtech: Western Digital Introduces New Portable Flash Solutions, Brings Alexa Supp

LAS VEGAS, NV — At CES 2018, Western Digital introduced some new products and feature updates to existing ones across both their SanDisk and WD brand of external storage solutions.
Consumers have had a number of miniature high-capacity thumb drives to choose from. However, the maximum capacity has topped out at 128GB (examples: SanDisk UltraFit, Samsung Flash Drive Fit, and the Mushkin Atom) till now. Thanks to the progress made with 3D NAND and TLC, it has now become possible for manufacturers to continue to offer low-cost higher capacity drives. Western Digital is introducing the SanDisk UltraFit 256GB USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A thumb drive at CES 2018.
The 256GB version will have write speeds of around 40 MBps and read speeds of up to 130 MBps. SanDisk obviously compares this against USB 2.0 flash drives, as the TLC NAND and miniature controller can't sustain higher write speeds (applicable to all thumb drives in this category). The new capacity point will have a MSRP of $150, though we expect street prices to be much lower (considering the suggested MSRPs and pricing on Amazon for the lower-capacity versions).
A 1TB thumb drive with a Type-C connector (no cables needed, unlike the other popular low cost 1TB external flash devices that we have seen before) is also being demonstrated. Based on our estimates, it is roughly sized at 82mm x 42mm (not considering the Type-C connector). It is likely that the NAND used is the same as the one in the UltraFit 256GB version. We are reaching out to figure out the native USB controller capable of handling that much amount of flash memory.
We also have an update to the Extreme Portable SSD lineup. While the Extreme 500 and Extreme 510 Portable SSDs were based on 2.5" SATA boards, the new SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD becomes compact and pocket-sized. It is likely that a M.2 SATA SSD is being used inside the new version. The enclosure is IP55 rated to withstand rain, dust, spills, and drops.
The new Extreme Portable SSD comes with a USB 3.1 Gen 2 bridge, enabling read speeds of up to 550 MBps. It has a Type-C interface. The bundled Type-C cable also has an include Type-A adapter similar to what we saw in the WD My Passport SSD. Four capacity points - 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB - are being launched, with pricing set at $130, $200, $400, and TBD respectively.
We also have an external flash storage solution with the Western Digital branding - the My Passport Wireless SSD. It is similar to the other My Passport Wireless devices that we have seen before, with an emphasis on PC-free operation. The new devices comes with a shock-resistant SSD inside and allows access to content from the My Cloud mobile app. A DLNA server is also integrated.
On the content ingestion side, the My Passport Wireless SSD Wi-Fi Mobile Storage unit has a USB 2.0 Type-A port (that can be used to charge another device / make the Wireless SSD act as a power bank) and a SD card slot. It can be connected to a PC / charged through a USB 3.0 Type-A port (read/write speeds are around 450/400 MBps, and the included charging adapter is a 12W one). It can also be accessed wirelessly using the built-in 1x1 802.11ac/n WLAN radio. The four capacity points - 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB - are priced at $249, $299, $449, and $799.
Western Digital also taled about some new features in the firmware update for the My Cloud Home devices and the associated My Cloud app. The most interesting is the voice-activated media streaming features. Users can stream the stored music collections using Alexa voice commands. Chromecast support has also been added to the My Cloud app.

Anandtech: CES 2018: OneLink Announces Safe & Sound – Smart Smoke + Carbon Monoxide A

LAS VEGAS, NV — OneLink has shown off a new product named Safe & Sound that combines a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector along with a 10W speaker and Amazon Alexa for a triple-thread smart-home device. The Safe and Sound device includes a hands-free voice-controlled speaker along with built-in Alexa Voice services allowing owners to use the full suite of features found in the Amazon echo. This includes playing music, audio books, news, controlling other smart-home devices and more.
The 2-in1 alarm is powered by First Alert’s technology for smoke and carbon monoxide detection and warns you to danger within the home and location with an 85db alarm. If multiple Safe & Sounds devices are installed, they will all ring so you will know there is a danger no matter where you may be inside your home. It will also notify your mobile phone if there is a smoke or CO emergency as well. The Safe & Sound uses three sensors, Photoelectric, Ionization, and Electrochemical to warn users of hazards.
The device installs like a standard hardwired smoke alarm and even includes adapter plugs to save the time of rewiring. Even though it has a 10-year sealed Lithium battery the device is hardwired the battery is only used in case of a power outage.
The OneLink Safe & Sound will cost $249.99. A version with Google Assistant will hit the market later this year if that is your preferred voice-controlled system.

Anandtech: Riotoro at CES 2018: New Full-Tower and Mid-Tower Cases, new Enigma G2 Pow

LAS VEGAS, NV — Riotoro has announced a couple of new products to add to their existing chassis and product lines with the Prism RGB Full-Tower Case, the CR488 Mid-Tower Case, and Enigma G2 Power Supplies. Riotoro says the Prism case was designed from the ground-up to deliver unparalleled cooling performance, quiet operation, and customizable RGB lighting while the CR488 was said to blend style, cooling efficiency, and a spacious interior that makes PC building effortless.
    CR1288TG Prism

The CR1288TG Prism case features exterior integrated RGB lighting which can be controlled by the top panel or the case cable can be connected to your RGB-ready motherboard. The top panel has buttons to control the speed and lighting color on the fly. The exterior lighting has a total of 256 colors which should fit any builders’ planned theme and distributes lighting throughout the chassis interior as well. Also on the front panel are fan controls, power/reset button, headphone and microphone jacks, as well as two USB 3.0 ports and two USB 2.0 ports forgoing any USB Type-C connection. The front of the case has easy to remove dust filters in the front, bottom, and top (magnetic washable dust filter on top). The tempered glass full-panel side window is tinted and allows users to show off the components inside. Riotoro also touts the CD1288 as the lightest full-tower case in the world with RGB functionality.
The interior is split into two chambers, one for the motherboard, CPU, GPU, and cooling, while the left, or back chamber is where the power supply (up to 220mm), SSD/HDD with space for cable management. The chassis will fit motherboards from Mini-ITX up to E-ATX, four GPUs up to 400mm in length with CPU heatsink clearance up to 180mm. There is a lot of room for whatever one would like to throw inside.
The CR1288TG has four 2.5-inch and four 3.5-inch bays which do not require tools to access. The chassis supports up to seven fans in 120 or 140mm flavors (2x 140mm and 1x 120mm included) and is able to fit two radiators – one up top up to 360mm and one in front up to 280mm.
Pricing is TBA and the Riotoro Prism CR1288 will be available in Q2 2018.
    CR488

The CR488 mid-tower gives users a sleek exterior with a lot of interior space for a small price. The case exterior is all black with a small side panel window for viewing the parts inside. The only color influence here is a red stripe down the front panel with the included 120mm front fan with red LEDs (another rear 120mm fan is included but is without LEDs). If you need RGB color, it will have to come from the motherboard or strips added to the interior. The front panel IO consists of power and reset buttons, microphone and headphone jacks, as well as two USB 3.0 ports.
The interior is also split into two chambers. The left portion is able to house Mini ITX up to ATX motherboards, two GPUs up to 415mm, and CPU cooler clearance is listed up to 165mm. The right chamber is able to hold two 2.5” drives and three 3.5” drives with PSU support up to 220mm. The case will support up to five total fans with two 120mm on top, one 120mm in back and the bottom, as well as two 120mm in front or one 140mm. For water cooling the case has mounts on the front and top to support up to a 240mm radiator in both locations.
MSRP on the CR488 is $69.99 and is available now.

    Enigma G2 Power Supply

The last announcement from Riotoro is the addition of a new power supply line names Enigma G2. The Enigma G2 is available in 650, 750, and 850 Watts and is semi-modular with flat cables to minimize clutter, ease installation, and improve airflow. All Enigma G2 units are 80 Plus Gold efficiency and use 100% Japanese capacitors for a longer life and greater reliability. Riotoro also says that it class-leading voltage regulation and uses a 120mm fluid dynamic bearing fan they say is inaudible under average loads. The fan can be set to three cooling modes in order to balance cooling and noise: Fanless, Silent, and Cooling.
The power supplies include full over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current, over-power, and short-circuit protections. Riotoro has a lot of faith in this line of power supplies as it has a 10-year warranty. This makes sense as the OEM for the Enigma G2 line is Seasonic who's reputation of high-quality power supplies precede them in the industry.
The Enigma G2 power supplies will be available 1Q 2018 with the 650W priced at $69.99, 750W at $89.99 and the 850W at $109.99.

Anandtech: 3dRudder 'Blackhawk' Offers Precision Control For Gaming

With CES 2018 in full swing, 3dRudder is back for the fourth year in a row. This year, 3dRudder is showing off a revised version of its VR foot controller called the 3dRudder Blackhawk that features a new design intended to better suit gaming purposes. 3dRudder also updated its software suite to improve the usability of the device.
The 3dRudder is a novel controller that lets you navigate 3D space with your feet, so you can leave your hands free to do other things. It supports desktop software, such as 3D CAD design applications, and it also works with VR design applications, such as the Unreal Engine VR Editor. And from day one, 3dRudder intended the device to work with VR games. The company created software that brings 3dRudder into room-scale VR and Oculus Rift Games.
The original 3dRudder supported the above use cases, but the controller doesn’t offer the level of precision many would like to have seen for gaming. You can learn to be precise with the 3dRudder in CAD applications, and in slow-paced games, but rapid movements are difficult to perform without losing footing on the device. The 3dRudder Blackhawk includes straps for your feet to solve that problem. The straps are made of a firm yet flexible material that gently clamps your feet into place. This ostensibly allows you to play games with higher intensity and not have to worry about losing your footing on the controller.
The new Blackhawk also includes an Active Dead Zone Feature which takes the intensity of your movement into account and provides a higher level of control. For example, when sitting still, the 3dRudder can still register small movements. With the Active Dead Zone, users will not need to adjust the sensitivity to counter any jittery movements as the ADZ compensates for you.
The new controller also includes LEDs that indicate the status of the device, and it includes guides along the center to help you place your feet in the correct position without having to look down. The LEDs are exclusive to the 3dRudder Blackhawk, but the guides and straps for your feet will be available as upgrades for existing 3dRudder devices. 3dRudder said that the foot guide kits and the foot strap kits would be available in February and will sell for $24 and $19, respectively. The company plans to sell the 3dRudder Blackhawk for $139, and the kits should be available in the spring.

Anandtech: Acer’s New Swift 7 Gets 14-inch Display, LTE Modem, Becomes Thinner & Pric

LAS VEGAS, NV — Just a little over a year ago Acer started selling its original Swift 7 laptop that was thinner than one centimeter, yet packed quite a decent set of hardware. At this year’s CES, Acer is launching the second-generation Swift 7 that is even thinner, yet has a larger display and an integrated 4G/LTE modem from Intel. Meanwhile, the new system is also considerably more expensive than its predecessor.
The new Acer Swift 7 (SF714-51T) comes in a brand-new aluminum chassis featuring an 8.98-mm z-height, down from 9.98 mm in case of the 1st Gen Acer Swift. The new design moves two USB Type-C ports and a TRRS connector from the right side to the left removes the fingerprint reader from the touchpad and uses slightly different display hinges. The display itself now measures 14” and judging by its thinner bezels, the laptop itself did not get significantly larger than the original Swift 7 (if at all) that came with a 13.3" LCD. To optimize internal interconnections (perhaps, to install the LTE antenna behind the top display bezel), Acer moved the webcam from the top of the display bezel to its bottom. In general, the all-black matte finish of the new Swift 7 looks very classy and will fit into almost any interior.
Moving on inside. Since Intel did not update its Y-series ultra-low-voltage processors last year, the 2nd Gen Acer Swift 7 is based on the 7th Generation dual-core Core i7-7Y75 SoC featuring the Kaby Lake microarchitecture and a 4.5 W TDP. The CPU is accompanied by 8 GB of LPDDR3 memory as well as a 256 GB PCIe SSD (at present it is unclear whether the company plans a 512 GB version). The laptop features a 2×2 802.11ac Wi-Fi + Bluetooth module for local wireless connectivity as well as a 4G/LTE modem from Intel for comms over wider areas. The new Swift 7 comes with an integrated eSIM so users can quickly buy new contracts using Mobile Plans app when they move from country to country. Meanwhile, Acer bundles a 1 GB Transatel data plan that is valid for one month in 48 countries with the laptop to demo capabilities of the system.
When it comes to battery life, Acer rates the new Swift 7 model to work for up to 10 hours based on the MobileMark 2014 test results, but does not disclose capacity of the battery. The predecessor featured a 9-hour battery life, but back then Acer did not specify conditions or workloads for that number.
The new Acer Swift 7 (SF714-51T) will be available in the U.S. and the U.K. this April for $1699 and £1599, respectively. This is significantly higher than the price of the first-generation Acer Swift 7 (based on the Core i7-7Y75 and featuring 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage) even early in the life cycle when it retailed for $1299. At present, such a laptop can be purchased for $1206. Acer naturally justifies the higher price tag with the addition of a bigger display, a 4G modem, and a slightly thinner profile, but the difference may be considered too high by many users (especially because the performance of the systems should close if not equal). On the other hand, the 1st Gen Acer Swift 7 is still available and therefore selling an all-black 4G-enabled Swift 7 at a premium makes sense early in its lifecycle.

Anandtech: NVIDIA Releases 390.65 WHQL Game Ready Driver, Includes Mitigation Updates

In the wake of Meltdown and Spectre essentially every major industry player has issued a security statement, and NVIDIA is no exception, especially as a hardware vendor. Their initial security bulletin last week disclosed that while their GPU hardware was thought to be “immune,” security updates to GPU drivers and affected ARM SoCs were forthcoming. Along with the standard updates and bugfixes, 390.65 brings some of those mitigations to the GPU display driver side.
Strictly-speaking, 390.65 brings a security update with mitigations for a variant of Spectre (CVE-2017-5753), and is applicable to GeForce, Quadro, and NVS products. NVIDIA did note that their GPU display driver is potentially susceptible to the second Spectre variant (CVE-2017-5715), and are working on a related future update. The reason for the Spectre-focused fixes from NVIDIA, despite the fact that these are GPU drivers and have nothing to do with the vulnerable CPU hardware, is that Spectre in particular is an attack that targets other programs and spies on their data via a side channel. Since the hardware problems allowing Spectre cannot be easily fixed, part of the industry-wide mitigation efforts include modifying critical software so that they can't be spied on by Spectre. GPU drivers in turn are especially compelling Spectre targets - and high priority fixes - since they have in-depth kernel access.
In any case, Tesla and GRID products are additionally affected; depending on the OS/virtualization platform, security updates for those are either already released or due to release by the end of the month.
Beyond GPU drivers, GeForce Experience has also received a beta 3.12 security update, with general availability expected next Monday. For NVIDIA’s other products, there are now security updates for SHIELD Tablet and SHIELD TV, as well as Tegra Jetson TK1, TX1, and TX2. Across all products, NVIDIA has only identified the TX2 as vulnerable to both Meltdown and Spectre, as opposed to just Spectre.
Moving on to the more typical driver updates, Fortnite is the Game Ready headliner for 390.65, which includes Shadowplay Highlights support for Fortnite's Battle Royale mode. 390.65 also brings support for the recently-announced NVIDIA Freestyle, a new GeForce Experience feature that applies post-processing filters to supported games. Currently, Freestyle, along with an updated Ansel, is only available in the beta GeForce Experience 3.12 when Experimental Features are enabled.
On the more minor side, 390.65 now features a pop-up balloon notification when an external GPU is connected or disconnected, as well as updates/additions to SLI profiles for DIRT 4, Total War: Warhammer II, and X-Morph Defense.
Wrapping up this driver update, NVIDIA has documented the following resolved issues:

    • Surfaces in Batman Arkham Knight are rendered incorrectly on a GeForce GTX 970.
    • Artifacts appear when using Gamestream on the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, TITAN X (Pascal), and TITAN Xp.
    • On notebook Fermi GPUs, enabling stereoscopic 3D brings up error message pointing to the Stereo driver.

The updated drivers are available through the GeForce Experience Drivers tab or online at the NVIDIA driver download page. More information on this update and further issues can be found in the 390.65 release notes. More details on NVIDIA’s Meltdown and Spectre mitigations can be found through their Security Bulletin page.

Anandtech: Cooler Master at CES 2018: New MasterAir G100M and MA410M, MasterLiquid ML

LAS VEGAS, NV — Cooler Master has announced a new air-based CPU cooler at CES 2018, the MasterAir G100M. Also announced is addressable RGB LED lighting with a new temperature detection feature for their liquid and air coolers. The new MasterLiquid ML240 SMART all-in-one CPU cooler and new MasterAir MA410M come with the new addressable RGB lighting which allows for syncing with a variety of vendors existing certified products including ASUS, Gigabyte, ASRock, and MSI.
    MasterAir G100M

The Cooler Master MasterAir G100M features a new custom heat column technology which is designed to increase the direct contact surface area for better heat dissipation and cooling performance. The entirety of the 46.3mm high column is enabled to move heat from the processor in the shortest and quickest way possible. The MasterAir G100M features a TDP of 130W which is similar to be quiet!'s Shadow Rock low profile cooler for speculative comparison. The G100M is designed for low profile systems and with more compact builds in mind, certainly not for massive overclocks due to the svelte size and TDP. Also featured is an RGB ring and fan which are compatible with RGB enabled motherboards.
Certified Addressable RGB LEDs with Temperature Detection - MasterAir MA410M and MasterLiquid ML240 SMART

Also announced at CES 2018 are Cooler Master's new RGB LED lighting with temperature detection CPU coolers, the MasterAir MA410M and MasterLiquid ML240 SMART. Both these new coolers have addressable RGB LED lighting with temperature detection. The MasterAir MA410M and MasterLiquid ML240 SMART's addressable RGB can be synced up with compatible and certified devices from companies such as ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, and ASRock, which should offer better customization with existing products such as peripherals, motherboards, and even VGA. The new SMART temperature detection allows for the changing of the RGB lighting based on the CPUs temperature which isn't necessarily a new feature on the market but is certainly new to Cooler Masters range of cooling solutions. Other products which will feature the temperature detection include the MasterLiquid ML240R, ML120R and MasterFan MF120M and MF122R-Addressable RGB.
Availability and pricing are currently unavailable at the time of writing.

Anandtech: ADATA Unveils New XPG RGB DDR4 Kits: Spectrix D60 4600MHz & Spectrix DS40

LAS VEGAS, NV — At CES 2018 this week, ADATA is showcasing two new XPG DDR4 memory models with RGB LEDs: the Spectrix D60 RGB DDR4 and Spectrix DS40 RGB DDR4. The heatsink-clad Spectrix D60 will have a maximum speed of 4600MHz, and comes not too long since last summer’s launch of the XPG Spectrix D40 RGB DDR4, the first Spectrix model. As the D40 was described as the ‘flagship’, the D60 is presumably the equally multicolored successor, joined by the XPG Z1 DDR4-4600 2 x 8GB kit also debuting at CES.
And if the LED craze hasn’t hit you quite yet, ADATA has their new RGB LED equipped Spectrix DS40 SO-DIMM, for those who absolutely require colored lights in their mini-ITX system. And in terms of lighting control, ADATA stated that the new modules work with the XPG Auro Sync, presumably related to the XPG RGB Sync App Beta. Though no further technical details on the D60 or DS40 were given at the time of writing, for comparison the new Z1 DDR4-4600 2 x 8GB kit is known to run at 1.5V with CL19-26-26-46, while, the older Spectrix D40 runs at a maximum 3200MHz with CL16-18-18 at 1.35V.
    Buy Spectrix D40 PC4-24000 16 on Amazon.com
Buy ADATA XPG GAMMIX D10 DDR4-2666 32GB on Newegg
In any case, ADATA is claiming the DS40 to be the “world’s first” RGB LED SO-DIMM, yet another sign of how LEDs continue to find themselves garnishing every computer component possible. As ADATA happens to be showcasing server NV-DIMMs at CES as well, perhaps we should consider ourselves lucky that it is not the world’s first RGB LED NV-DIMMs.
While D60 and DS40 pricing were not disclosed, the new LED-less XPG Z1 DDR4-4600 2 x 8GB kit will launch this quarter at an MSRP of $579, presumably comparable to the Spectrix D60.

Anandtech: Cooler Master at CES 2018: New MasterWatt V and Maker Power Supplies with

LAS VEGAS, NV — This week at CES 2018, it has been a busy time for Cooler Master as they have announced a wide range of cases and coolers to the world. In addition, Cooler Master has also announced two brand new power supplies in the form of the MasterWatt V series and the MasterWatt Maker with Cooler Master's new Connect v2.0 technology and the Overlay.live cloud-based telemetry.
    MasterWatt V Series

The new MasterWatt V series of power supplies will be available in 550W, 650W, and 750W models; all of them featuring a fully modular design. These new models will feature an 80PLUS Gold efficiency rating and come implemented with 16AWG PCIe cables and EPS 12v connectors for a more efficient connection. These cables are also thicker than regular cables as to handle heat more effectively.
Cooler Master has gone another step further and increased the maximum operating temperature up to 122°F (50°C) for harsher conditions and scenarios where heat is an issue. Cooling the new V series is a single 135mm FDB fan and for assurance, Cooler Master has given the MasterWatt V series a solid 10-year warranty which is double that of the previous iteration.
MasterWatt Maker with Cooler Master Connect v2.0

The MasterWatt Maker with Cooler Master Connect v2.0 will be available in 1200W and 1500W models for the most extreme and powerful of system builds. Both models have an 80PLUS Titanium efficiency rating with efficiency levels up to 94% for the best possible performance. Cooler Master has opted for a 3D circuit design which is designed to reduce the overall number of components used inside the PSU itself which is designed to increase airflow and reduce operating temperatures.
With the Cooler Master Connect v2.0 enabled power supplies such as the new Maker 1200W and 1500W units, a suite of new tools is available for performance monitoring and just like Overlay.live allows for telemetric data to be outputted, the suite allows for real-time data via the including application without the need for additional hardware, wires or external devices; all you need is the MasterPlus+ software. Overlay.live

One of the biggest features on the new range of Maker units is the implementation and incorporation of Overlay.live. Overlay.live is a cloud-based monitoring application designed to provide near real-time data. performance figures and allows the data to be used as an overlay during live streaming. The app itself was founded by designed mainly by Isaïe Simonnet and Timothee Pineau, with a core design team consisting of Alex Frêne and Gergely Imreh. The design and purpose are to provide accurate statistics via a telemetric data system, not only for power users such as extreme overclockers, but those requiring advanced and real-time data dependant on their systems operation.
Isaïe Simonnet went on to say "Overlay.live is a totally independent project aimed to provide broadcasters with more data for their stream. Overlay.live is already being used by PC Hardware streamers such as Wizerty (Number 1 Overclocker in France / #14 Worldwide) and DrWeez (The number 1 overclocker in South Africa) for their live streams".
More information can be found at the Overlay.live website.
In regards to pricing and availability of the new MasterWatt Maker and MasterWatt V series of power supplies, there was no information at the time of writing.

Anandtech: Corsair at CES 2018: Wireless K63 Mechanical Keyboard with Accompanying La

LAS VEGAS, NV — Corsair has announced a companion to the K63 Mechanical keyboard with a wireless K63 version and a new lapboard accessory. The K63 wireless adds 2.4 GHz Bluetooth connectivity and 75 hours of battery life (without backlighting - 15 hours with). Though not an exclusive, Corsair touts the use of 128-bit AES encryption to help keep the transmissions safe. Apart from that, the K63 wireless has blue backlighting instead of the wired K63’s red are both controlled by the Corsair CUE software. Carrying over from the wired version are the full Cherry MX Red switches, media keys, and full n-key rollover.
Realizing the need for a compact wireless mechanical keyboard would be good for living room gaming, they have included a lapboard with it. While it is similar to the Corsair’s own lapdog, that is a wired solution. The lapboard here is wireless which saves a lot of space where the cables were placed allowing room for a wrist rest. The entire setup is also lighter weighing in at almost 6.5 lbs./2.94 kg (2.4 lbs./1.09 kg for the keyboard itself), compared to 5.8 lbs./2.63 kg for the Lapdog alone.
The Cherry MX Red keys themselves keep the 1000 Hz report rate and the keyboard retains the MUTE, VOL UP/DOWN, STOP, PREV, PLAY/PAUSE, and NEXT media keys. Wired connectivity goes through USB 3.0/3.1 Type-A connector, is 6' long, and charges its Lithium-ion battery through there as well.
The K63 wireless keyboard is available now for $110 (keyboard only), or $160 with the keyboard and lapboard.
