Owners of iPhones and other smartphones are one step closer towards taking complete control of their gadgets, thanks to a new government ruling Monday on the practice of "jailbreaking."Last edited by DancingCorpse; 07-26-10 at 07:31 PM. Reason: TOS

this is great, it is also legal to strip copyright from dvd's for certain uses as well. finally i have a little faith in the system, way to go DMCA
check out the story here
i dont know about you but when it comes to games, movies, and music, all that DRM only hurts one person. the person to paid for the item.
think about it. if you bought assasins creed 2, you have to be online at all times or you cant even play. mind you its a single player game.
or the internet pirate obtains an illegal copy of that same game, guess what. he does not have to be online to play
who is affected here.......
i dont know if any of you were the lucky enough few to buy that gem at launch only to realize that their authentication servers went down and nobody could play their brand new game until a few days later when they got the servers back up.

A-freaking men.
I liked the comparison on one of the blogs I read that said, "Imagine if you bought a toster, and the company that made it threatened to sue you if you put anything except WonderBread in it. And they had the full weight of the US government enforcing that decree. That is functionally the equivalent to Apple telling you that you are forbidden from installing anything that they haven't explicitly approved of on your iPhone."

Re: now legal to jailbreak phones
It might be legal, but phone company's can still say "jailbreaking voids your warranty" and whatnot. It's still stupid as hell since theres a large amount of people that jailbreak phones just for Roms and emulators, and a majority of them are being used illegally.

yeh i understand that some people out there get carried away with the illegal stuff, but people who have legitimate uses should not be made to suffer. for instance i know in canada there is a tax added to cd purchases to compensate for pirating of music.
ok that makes sense, lets tax the people who actually pay for our music....
or say you are locked into a contract with sprint for another year, but you really want an iphone. well now you can get an iphone and use sprint with it so you dont screw up your contract.
hell i think this is a good place to start, it is nice to see some people in power at least have a little understanding of technology. i figured they were all cavemen who side with the "videogames teach people to kill" crowd
