    Radeon 6xxx series video cards

I'm sure some of you have head some news. I've been keeping up. Anyone purchased one? Anyone looking at how lowly priced these cards are in relation to the past?

Jesus christ. The 6850 going for $180? Feels like a steal. I'm willing to bet the price is going to fly up.

They're mid-level performance parts. Slated to replace the 5850 & 5830. They still perform lower than the 5870, 5970 & 5990. If the initial reviews are to be trusted, they appear to run warmer than the 5800 series cards.

I think AMD may be working for a potential that we don't see yet with the combination of GPU and CPU. I have a feeling that the new 6xxx series has some secret that AMD isn't telling us.

I paid $300 for my 4870 2.5 years ago, perhaps it will be upgrade time soon. Alas, everytime I plan to upgrade something else breaks and has to be fixed so... we will see.

I'm so out of the loop. I have a 4870 I think. Is this an upgrade over that?

As far as I understand it...

The 6850 is about the same performance as the 5830, and 6870 is about the same performance as the 5850; the 6xxx have more features, and consume less power.

Sucks the Radeon 5xxx series cards can't crossfire with Radeon 6xxx series cards.

I really hope the 5xxx prices fall out with this new release, and AMD releases some more flagship models soon.. Seems a great many are disappointed with the results.

yeah these 6800 series are junk. 5800 series outperform them. They've taken the numbering scheme and changed it to mess with people's heads. These are the LOW end of the 6xxx scale despite the numbering being the same as the high end of the 5xxx scale.

I'd highly recommend either waiting, or going 5850 or better in the 5 series.

Krakkens and shit. stop tempting them.

I have a 5850, it gets me like 100fps on most maps on CS:S

While I agree with you that changing the numbering scheme seems asinine, I wouldn't call the cards "junk". In many games, the 6870 at least keeps pace with the 1GB 5870, a not insubstantial feat. A midlevel card with a midlevel price with last year's enthusiast performance should be a very attractive offer.
