    RemoteFX!

Just may be the coolest thing to happen to PC gaming in my house, ever. I run a Hyper-V server that hosts my Windows Home Server, my DCs, and my DHCP server and several other VMs I have for various things. With Remote FX, soon I will be able to play games on VMs and forever be proofed against things like DRM that jacks up a Windows load, having to upgrade hardware on many computers (lots of PC gamers at my house) and various other things that affect hardware computers, but not VMs. I will let you all know how it goes once I have it all set up. Just need to decide on Fire or Quatro for my server. Microsoft already demoed one playing Crisis on a VM. If this works out, I will only have to keep the one server with late model hardware and everything else can basically be thin clients. SWEET!

Virtualization of video is still going to put a huge performance hit, no matter what. Fine for older games, but not going to cut it for newer games.

Like I said, I will have to get a new vidcard on the server and see. I will let you know how it goes.

Not holding my breath but I *am* curious.

My guess is that anything 480p or less resolution will be ok... anything 720p or higher without a gigabit connection is gonna croak.

I agree with Wile, video will be the killer there. Sending decent resolution video from a VM to a thin client is a serious downfall. It can be done. We played with it on campus here and some of the buildings are still running CAT3 10 half lines and couldn't maintain even a desktop VM let alone a gaming one. If your server is local and maybe with gigabit internal you can pull it off. Let us know. They have higher end video cards that are meant for server use but they also run like $5k.

    Re: RemoteFX!

my server is in the living room (its very quiet) and there is Cat6 to everything. This project got delayed though because I spent a good deal of my budget on a new 27" monitor instead and Quatros and Fires are expensive.

    Re: RemoteFX!

    Project update:
I just upgraded my GPU in my gaming rig from a Geforce GTS 8800 (G92) to a Radeon 6870.
I looked into maybe modding the old Geforce into a quadro and it can be done. However, the best way to do it seems to be with RivaTuner.
My Hyper-V server is running on Server Core so no Riva tuner. I am considering moving the Hyper-V box to a full on Windows 2008 box for this project.
Upgrading the server to account for the increased CPU/RAM overhead of a full on Windows would be far cheaper than buying a Quadro card.
