Basically, a GPU or Playstation 3 is going to kick the crap out of your processor's ability to fold. If you have heat issues, just use the GPU.
Yea, my system gets HOT when folding! Don't get me wrong, I have an excellent water cooling loop, so the temps stay safe, but my case radiates heat like a bitch! The room gets so hot that I have to crank the fan and leave the door wide open for the temp to be tolerable for me to be in the office when running my GPUs and CPU at 100%.

The heat isn't as bad when just running the GPUs, so I agree with Toad that the GPUs are the way to go... especially if you have a decent nVIDIA card.

I had a productive night and processed about 12 WUs. My office is pretty warm, so I shut down my current WUs so I can cool things down again before work.

If you are using a GPU and cranking out work units within 4-8 hours, I would recommend that you always check the "Get bigger work units" box if you are using one of the system tray or console clients. If you are using the FAH Version 7 all-in-one client then I think it automatically has you doing the bigger work units. I think you get a higher score for bigger work units, especially when you can finish them pretty quickly (i.e. leave the GPU folding for awhile).

Here is a GPU folding power assessment current as of August 2010:

What is the best graphics card for folding? | bit-tech.net

The NVIDIA 460 GTX 768 MB version is pretty power-efficient, scores 8500 or so per day and is $125 with rebate at newegg. The 480 GTX is still over $300.

Edit: They made the same assessment for 2011! I was looking at that old site yesterday and bookmarked it, but apparently the new one came out today. What a convenient coincidence.

What is the Best Graphics Card for Folding 2011? | bit-tech.net

it seems like the NVIDIA GTX 560 Ti is about $240 and does 13000 points per day, but also uses about as much power as the 460 GTX so is more power efficient (if you have to pay your electric bill). They noted that you should make sure that the 3rd party manufacturer put a good cooler on the NVIDIA hardware to keep it cool.

I'm putting this here in case someone reads this thread while wanting to make a bargain PC Gaming PC... not bad to have a nice graphics card that runs efficiently, isn't too expensive and will fold like a champ.

NVIDIA GTX 560 Ti on Newegg.com - SPARKLE SX560T1024D5MH GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card = $229, and has a $25 rebate on newegg to bring it to $204. Powerful gaming graphics card and it's super at folding! I'm tempted to upgrade my PC...

I was looking at that as well. I am also considering two GTX 460s as it looks like I can get two of them for around $300.

For my 2nd rig, of course. The GTX 570s really crank out some numbers. I think yesterday I cranked out 25k points.
