Heh, just reread the OP ... I would just say roll with the 5870 (an anomalously powerful card when it was introduced). It will handle BF3 well enough until you can get a second one or a whole new yet next generation...
OP States that it would cost 2 6870s to buy 1 5870. The 6870's have pretty much similar performance but it has a lower TDP and runs cooler. They also had better scaling. After some driver fixes, the 5850/5870 CF is scaled to the same performance as their replacers (6850/6870). So The 6870 would be a better choice imo

And rollin' with a single 5870 to see what eye candy is available is 0 expenditure as per the OP he already owns one. I am just predicting it will play BF3 plenty well enough ...

    I dunno, 2x6870 = $350 Also.
    AnandTech - Bench - GPU11
The total power consumption is virtually the same for almost double the performance.

Ahh I thought you meant he should go with 5870 Crossfire. If you meant going with a single one to see what the new gen would offer yes I agree. BF3 requirements are still a bit scarce ATM.

On that note my new 560ti absolutely rocks every game I put to it so far at maximum settings at 1920x1080. For 220ish on sale, the 560ti is a great buy.

Initially I did, until I read he did not want to spend the money on another 5870... Just as a solo 5870 beats down a 6870, the 5870's in crossfire top the 6870s in crossfire.

But yeah, the 5870 is still kickin' plenty hard and I would wait and see what the post 5xx and post 6xxx cards from either vendor offer in 2012.

See the more and more I read about the different choices the less I want to upgrade! The 5870 kicks ass in all directions. And Crysis is still a benchmarking monster! I'm going with Soys "hold off for now" kind of action.
