Question Laptop for some video editing?

As some of you may know, wolverinebrother showed up at my house recently, and we're on a rock climbing road trip until December. We've got a bunch of electronics, but the laptop he brought is pretty inadequate for any video editing.

What would do the job for 1080p video at a reasonable (The lower the better) price? I've never owned a laptop, so help me out!

Browse the Sager website for laptops. You'll want i7 for sure.

Sager is a bit pricey, but very nice quality. I do recommend an i7 or i5 for video editing. And memory.

Personally I have liked Asus laptops a lot.

How much are you looking to spend?

I am seeing many viable options from 700 up.

The same ones that video edit well all have decent GPUs also and can game a bit for the most part to boot.

i5 or i7 for video editing and use 64bit OS with 6-8 GB of ram. I assume the video editing software you are using can use the extra cores for crunching. You may want to check with the software you are using for the video recommendations. I know CS5 for example recommends certain video cards in desktops and laptops because it is configured to use the GPU for enhanced performance.

If you want something durable, be sure to buy a business or professional line laptop from your chosen brand. They typically are made from better materials and have other features that prevent breakage and data corruption.

Personally, I recommend Lenovo thinkpads for windows and the MacBook pro for apple.

I saw somewhere on the net that for video editing we need a 7200 RPM harddrive. What do you machine heads think about that?
For when the One Great Scorer comes, to write against your name, he writes not that you won or lost, but how you played the Game

It is definitely worthwhile. The main tradeoff would be battery life.

Re: Laptop for some video editing?

Battery life is a significant factor. We're camping until around christmas, and an inverter in the car can only do so much for us. We might end up increasing our power access, but haven't crossed that bridge just yet.

How much am I willing to spend? As little as is reasonably possible.

Unfortunately your processing power needs will likely trump any hope of really good battery life.
