I come here for an explanation (the cable people couldn't provide one) on networking, specifically my speed I'm supposed to be getting is 30 mbps d/l, and 5mbps upload however speedtest shows between 12-19 d/l and 1-3 upload.. he comes out, plugs into the cable modem and shows these #s on his little netbook, he said it might be your security software.. so thinking to ask about a recommendation I asked what they had them run on their netbooks and he said that there is none on them.. is security software going to really slow my net connection by anwhere from 25-50%? or is it some other software I can be checking out.. I've checked the hardware part (used the mobo net plug vs the killer xeno pro) and the speeds are about the same

Re: Networking Question
depending on your firewall you are using and your virus protection, then yes it can slow it that much if you have a full internet suite that scans all incoming traffic. also a few other tweaks can be done to enhance your networking, another consideration to take in is other computers using the internet while your running a speed test. it will cause your speed to be down if someone else is accessing something at the time you are running it

Re: Networking Question
Another thing to consider, not only will usage use your connection and affect a speed test, but pure connections alone will slow it down. Around 200 persistent connections, even with no traffic, will bring a dsl connection to a crawl (Likely a cable line as well).

Re: Networking Question
cable modems are shared with the neighborhood. I ran into this issue with mediacom. I was paying for 20mb down 2mb up and during prime time the network in my town would hit 80+ percent utilization and my service got throttled. During prime time I was lucky to get 2mb down and 1mb up. My ping would jump into the 200ms range from my house to the server in Tempe 25 miles away. I complained, they acknowledged that the service I was paying for I wasn't getting...blah blah blah. Year later I finally had enough of their promises and canceled. I switched to a VDSL service through qwest and for $30 less a month I have 12mb down and 1 mb up BUT my service (I actually get 11.5 mb down 950kb up due to networking monitoring overhead) is consistent now. I get that regardless of time of day because I do not share my DSL circuit with anyone else. It is mine alone. Now even during prime time my service doesn't throttle. I gave up a tiny bit of bandwidth but my signal quality is phenomenal now. That same ping that was 200ms (primetime), 120ms (non primetime) under cable for 25 miles is now sub 40ms at all times with DSL. I get a cleaner signal and my 12mb plan is still more than enough for me to play my FPS game or do homework even while my wife is streaming netflix in the living room.

Guyver it actually did show those #s on his netbook, I was right there and watched him type the address for speedtest in..meh and I have good ping too for what that's worth, my d/l speed IS faster by almost double then from what I had in the past with the last net package it's the actually connection speed itself that the systems show with testing.. just weird
