Re: Gaming Laptop
Carrying textbooks and a big 'ol lappy around SUCKS!
Netbooks are cheap these days, less than 300.
If you do go with Laptops for gaming I have had great experience with Asus, and I noticed MSI has a bunch of lappys with a GTX570 mobile... and they are both considerably cheaper than Sager, Alienware, etc.
Asus has some nice ones with a GTX560M for around a grand.

The newest Asus gaming laptops are really slick IMO. But if I have a high powered laptop, I want it with a 15" screen, not a 17". I like the portability, and if I need to, there is an HDMI port, and I plug into a TV system or a monitor with docking station. Now, if I was replacing my desktop entirely, then I would probably go for a 17" laptop.
I heard the Asus G74s (high end ones) were able to run BF3 on Ultra. Anyone know if there was truth to that?

I disagree that gaming laptops are junk... I purchased a used alienware mx11 (r1) for $300 from a buddy a couple months back, and it has served me very well (bf2, bioshock 1 + 2, codmw2). It's compact and easy to stow away, and it has HDMI output so I can connect it to a nice external monitor and run games at 19kx1k resolution. The updated mx11 (r2) sells for ~700.

Re: Gaming Laptop
In respect to the price you pay, I say they are junk in comparison to a netbook + high end desktop that you can get for cheaper.
That's not to say that they can't be decent to play on. It's just worlds apart from the quality experience you will get for the same (or even much less) money on a desktop.
You don't need to lug a gaming laptop to class to take notes on. If you're anything like most college kids, you're only going to be surfing facebook anyways.

Weight! Get a light weight laptop for class. I lunged mine up and down stairs. With a couple classes worth of books it was very heavy. I have a "gaming" laptop that I use for work. It's meant to be portable but not convenient. I take it and setup in the office and it stays put for a couple weeks. Now my other laptop is smaller screen light weight and good for taking on the go.
For school I would buy a sub $500 laptop and build a desktop for gaming at home. It's nice to walk in flip the switch and go vs opening case plug in power, mouse, accessories then having to pack it all back up for class the next day.

Re: Gaming Laptop
Alienware is great but overpriced.
ASUS would be a great brand to get. However gaming laptops for school would suck. Carrying around all that extra weight. I would just get a cheaper laptop and build a decent desktop which for the price of the some of the gaming laptops you can.
