VIASAT-1 satellite broadband
Dear all,
Living in the middle of no where has it's benefits. The sounds of the wild and all that. However broadband has always been 1.5mb (I hope I got that right) download at the most fastest I can get anywhere. With a ping of around 1100 ms. Great stuff. Gaming not an option here........Until now. Viasat have launched their first satellite and this bad boy is the fastest satellite to be put up. I will after testing be purchasing the 10mb download option so on so forth.
I have been eagerly awaiting this new service so I can get back to laying claymores all over the gaff. Here's my problem. My tech support guy at my local provider for Wildblue claims that although the download speed is far better this will not effect the latency. I am confused. Is there something I do not know here?. Have I not taken into consideration the curvature of the banana? or some other such Tom foolery?. Oh one other question if I may, alienware machine. Good move or not so good?.
I thought I would ask those in the know in the gaming community. I would appreciate your advice please.
Many thanks all.

millwall!!! Haven't seen you in a while. I miss your colorful posts.
From what I have read the latency won't change with the increased bandwidth. The "pipe" will carry more data, but there will still be a delay from when it is transmitted/received.

Nice to hear from you civil. "Sent from my UrMoms using Tapatalk". Confused and will self destruct. I have not got a clue what that sentence means.
Yep the machine is expensive at about 1200 for the cheapest one. But if i buy one for around 6 or 7 i will end up buying to try to pack it up anyway. A bit like putting a lawnmower engine on a skateboard. With the Alien option I am guessing it is designed to run high end and has plenty of expansion.
nice to hear from you civil. and if my broadband gets faster will be back gaming soon.
Take care

I dont' know about the option you are looking at, we manage a few different VIASAT satellites on base and theres only one common thing between all of them - they are all half duplex. Meaning you can't send information and receive it at the same time - I would imagine that makes gaming a royal pain in the ass. Probably OK for something like WoW...probably not so much for shooters. I would definitely look into that before purchasing unless you just plan on getting it for other reasons as well.
Also unless your are maxing out your bandwidth already, an increase in bandwidth will not decrease latency by itself. It will increase the amount of Data you can send/receive without affecting your latency. Transceivers speed will have more to do with a latency decrease.millwalljames liked this post

Re: VIASAT-1 satellite broadband
I have been talking with a guy that runs the product development office for alienware.... he knows his stuff.... if you get a desktop from them you will be set. And if it doesn't work their customer service is great.
