Game exits when changing keyboard settings

When changing the keyboard mappings in the PC version of L4D, the game exits to the desktop. The crash happens as soon as I double click on a key binding/mapping, or as I click the change key button. The game instantly exits to the desktop, but doesn't display the usual windows 'this application stopped working etc etc' dialog. Apart from this, the game still plays normally, albeit without the keyboard settings I'm used to.

Disabling steam cloud syncing has no effect. Key settings can be set to default without a crash. Using the unbind command in console works normally, but the bind command only removes previous bindings for a key, it doesn't apply the new binding. eg 'bind r reload' only removes the previous binding for r, reload remains unbound.

The Application tab of the system event view shows the following error:
Faulting application hl2.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module datacache.dll, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x0000b423.

The system change since the game was working is that I've changed my Logitech G9 mouse (sadly no longer working) for a microsoft optical mouse.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Try renaming your config.cfg file that is in your \Steam\SteamApps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\cfg folder to config.cfg.old. Then run the game and see if it recreates a new default confiig file for you. If not, then you can rename that file back to what it was.

You might also try removing your mouse from the Device Manager and let it reinstall itself. There might be some left over files from the previous mouse that are screwing things up.

    ...

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I deleted the config file, and rand L4D, but it still crashes when editing keyboard settings. It did create a new config file however.
I opened the device manager, but the only entries under 'Mice and other pointing devices' were 'HID-compliant mouse' and 'Microsoft USB wheel optical mouse'. The logitech software doesn't seem to have any clear method of uninstallation. I have, however, already tried running L4D with a) The logitech mouse plugged in, and b) with the logitech software disabled, and neither approach worked. I'd prefer to leave the logitech software installed, as I am waiting for the mouse to return from repairs.

I think at this point I would uninstall the game, make sure all the L4D directories are deleted, and then reinstall the game.

I assume you have Googled the error message and did not find a solution?

    It Works!

After re-installing, I can change the key settings (Yay, I guess). Thanks for the help.

The error message wasn't displayed when the game exited, but was in the system log. I had googled it, but it was a fairly general error, and seemed to apply to many different problems.

    Again; thanks.
