Ok Ladies and Gents. Here is the latest. I swear Im gonna get banned from steam support soon.
Their response to my response to their first response to my ticket (confused yet?). Notice how there is no acknowledgment of my actual complaint:

Hello David,
Please refer to your user's manual and contact your ISP for information on how to change from from PPPoE to Bridge mode, as they will be able to better assist you with this.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.
My newest response:
Again thank you for your quick response.
Alas, you have Still not addressed the problem I am having with a solution that works to my satisfaction. This issue is a STEAM problem. This is NOT a problem with my modem. There of course may be temporary work-arounds, but the main issue is that the last L4D update is defective and needs to be repaired by steam. I would appreciate an acknowledgment of this issue and a concerted effort by Steam to effectively resolve this issue. Please admit that there is a problem with the recent update and find a way to fix it. I don't understand why it is so difficult for Steam to admit the broke L4D in the last update for some users. Most of us are computer geeks of some degree and realize that sometimes you accidentally break something while trying to improve something else.

VIVA LA REVOLUTION
This is the last support message the boys at steam are getting...
I want a phone number that I can reach a person to talk to!
Blaming my router and modem only goes so far.
All the other games I own play online great.
Left 4 Dead no longer plays online and locks up internet connection. The last patch put out by your company has stopped me and hundreds, maybe thousands of online gamers from being able to use this product. We have spent up to $50 to use this product in the advertised Co-Op mode.
I am not a kid using his daddies computer. I am a 41 year old man with 2 kids who want to know the steps to getting a full refund on 3 copies of this product.
I have been treated poorly by the your support staff by your cut and paste of useless links to fix this product.
If I am not issued a refund for the 3 copies of Left 4 Dead I will be contacting a lawyer to begin building a lawsuit on behalf of myself, my kids and the others that are being treated unfairly by your misleading advertisements and by the untrue statements of online play "Co-Op" on the Left 4 Dead box.
No more BS

Ok. Received another reply from Steam support. They finally admitted there was a problem. They state that the new update pushes more packets through than the speedstream modem can handle. That's the PPPoe issue others have talked about.
I finally gave in and tried a solution from another forum for the same issue (the one I have referred to in a previous post). For me the solution has seemed to work. It places your modem in whats called bridge mode. Which is basically turning it into a doorway with no door. Packets are not having to stop and open the door and therefore do not backup.
My router now does that job. In the next post below I have cut and pasted the solution I used. Please try it and let us all know how it worked for you.

Ok Ladies and Gents! Well I broke down and tried error10's fix. It was almost right and after some friendly help from AT&T, my L4D works great. And as a matter of fact, my internet is much faster.
Below I have cut and pasted the solution from error10 and added a few hints and highlights. They are the stuff in italics.
1. Connect to your speedstream modem (http://192.168.0.1)
(before you do this, make sure your modem is connected directly to your computer or you will not be able to get in)
2. Click 'advanced' and then click 'change configuration'. It may require you to log in with an access code. If so, your access code should be printed on the bottom of your speedstream.
3. Click PPP and change it from PPPoE to "Bridge" and save your changes
(after you have done this, restart your modem from the modem configuration page. NOT THE POWER BUTTON. don't ask me why this has to be. I don't know. didn't work if I just powered it off.)
Now! Check if you can open a web page. IF you cannot, your on the right track. ((this is where I screwed up and had to reset my modem)) Also, I had to reset my modem by holding in on the reset button. You may not need to do this. Try doing everything else first before you go back to resetting the modem. (poke through the paper with the word rest on the back for 30 seconds and let the modem fully reboot). Go on to step 4.
Step 4 for if you have a router:
4. Log into your router (If you have your router's owners manual, great. If not, download it from the internet before you do all this stuff, cause you may need it.)(made the next line red, cause it doesn't apply to my router, a belkin, and you should look up in your owners manual how to set your router to PPPoe) (mine is a Linksys WRT54g) and click basic setup.
Step 4a: Change your WAN/Internet type from DHCP to PPPoE and then enter your credentials. (username@sbcglobal.net with password, etc.)(
OK! THIS IS IMPORTANT! THIS IS WHERE I SCREWED UP! THE PASSWORD YOU WILL NEED IS YOUR ORIGINAL SBCGLOBAL PASSWORD YOU USED TO SET UP YOUR ACCOUNT. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW THIS, CALL SBC SUPPORT AND DO AN AUTO RESET. THEN FOLLOW THE ABOVE PROCEDURE INCLUDING RESETTING YOUR MODEM
Step 4b: Keep service name blank, (this next two may not apply to you. Your mtu may be lower than whats listed here. Mine was.)connection mode = keepalive, mtu = default (1492).
Step 5: IMPORTANT! Using your routers internal restart process (not power off), restart your modem. This is critical.
I did not include error10's PC instructions because I did not do them and do not know if they worked.
Finally, the gentleman at AT&T advised me of two additional modems you can try. A Motorola 2210, or a 2WIRE modem/router. I don't know how expensive they are, but both are available from Best Buy.
GOOD LUCK!

Excellent! Too bad you end up having to fight with them to get an answer. Glad you got it fixed.
