How am I even supposed to install this game??

Just got the game for the PC, but I have absolutely NO clue how to play it. I put the disc in and it starts to install.. It says it's finished and whatever and I click "Finish". Okay... Now what? Shouldn't a shortcut be put on the desktop? I searched the computer for it but it doesn't show up. I downloaded the dedicated server thing from Steam but that didn't work. How in the hell do I do this?

Open STEAM, Choose Library, click Left 4 Dead, Click "play game"

Not under tools, click the games tab to the left of tools.

Goodie.. Now I have an even bigger problem. I'm trying to play but nothing comes up at all. The screen goes black and the sound is playing but nothing comes up, and it's telling me to fix my screen resolution(and it's already at the correct resolution). Unfortunately this has happened with my other Steam game except the game showed up on the screen. The resolution box doesn't go away, either.

Delete this.

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\cfg\Video.txt

They will all reset to default when you restart the game.
