I have a theory, it could be midgets! OR The Origin of Specials (Not Species)
So, I was talking to my friend about Left 4 Dead and the Special Infected when I had a thought, not just any thought, but one of those thoughts that you say to yourself: "Why didn't I think of it sooner?! Idiot!"
That thought was on the origins of the Special Infected and went a little something like this:
The normal Infected are obviously just the people who caught the virus and dropped dead. Now the question is, where do the Specials come into the equation because if it was just the virus mutating, as virus' do, then why the consistency in type and design, and why so few? I mean on one play through you kill thousands of Common Infected, so surely there should be more Common that are changing.
Then it hit me, could the Special Infected have started off as Carriers? Is that what happens to them once they die? Are we going to see a Smoker Bill in a future instalment?
Yes, my life is so empty that I openly theorise about a game in a world beyond the online one.
And before anyone calls me on the consistency question, I do understand the limitations of game design. Jeez, little up.One in the head to keep them dead.....

Then they are no more zombies than they are in 28 Days/Weeks Later.
But, I am willing to alter my thesis to encapsulate this, which then means that Carriers do in fact give in to the virus, but after an extended amount of time. Thus showing the delay in the Special Infected showing themselves. This would also show why some types appear even later (Spitters, Jockeys, Chargers). All of this means that even later there is the chance for yet more variations of the Special Infected as the virus has longer to mutate and thus mutate it's host. One in the head to keep them dead.....

Let's not start this debate... it's happened before. For the sake of this whole thing, let's say that they ARE alive and they ARE Zombies.
If Carriers gave in to the infected then they aren't Carriers. They're infected. Carriers are Asymptomatic Infected. If they developed symptoms then they aren't Carriers, it's just the infection took longer than normal to show symptoms.
This still wouldn't cause the Physiological Mutations related to the Special Infected. The most logical explanation would be Genetic or in the Chromosomes. Think about it, you've never seen a Male Witch have you? Or a Female Tank? Male Spitter? This makes them all seem to be Chromosomal. However, the anomaly in this is the Boomer which has both Male and Femal Variants. This means it could be a Genetic Predisposition to how the body reacts when confronted with the Infection, or maybe even all of it. They all look IDENTICAL as well, which would mean that the SI must be genetically similar. Even if it's in one bit of one Chromosome it would be more logical.
Another thing could be Environmental. This would explain the presence of Spitters, Jockeys and Chargers down South but not up North.
Sorry, but your theory really doesn't make any sense.
Hopefully the Alpha Bitch will be in here to correct me or prove you wrong even further.
