I think pistols are just for tactical approaches and strategy when the game is serious. On the other hand, melee weapons such as axes, chainsaws are for player satisfaction of hack and slash aspects.

Having recently been incaped with a team jerk using just pistols.

PS: what is with the blasting at a tank with pistols?

Uh, melee weapons are a bit more useful IMO. For this reason, refer to the example below.

You have an axe. You hit a zombie once, and it splits in two.

You have dual pistols, and spam the shit out of a zombie with it. Less chance it'll die with a low number of hits.

That's almost exactly what's happened for me. I find that with machine guns and rifles you can't move as quickly through the maps though. I do still pick up a shotgun for "rush maps" like Dead Air 4.

I dont really think that range has anything to do with whether you have a shotgun or not as the hordes and stuff have to get close to hit you, boomers have a limited range (about the same as a shotgun) and you get given a pistol when incapped anyway. The only thing to watch out for is the smoker and your team (or bots) should be able to take care of them.

Everytime a tank gets hit by a shot it slows down. That way if you slowly shoot the pistols it can slow it right down. So if a tank is chasing a player who is slow shotting pistols at him, he will never catch him.

Not if you headshot them...Less spam more aim and things work alot better. Also pistols stun/slow down SI. Like shooting a jockey with pistols slows it right down from any postion, if your team is paying attention they can blast him dead in seconds.

Pistols are surprisingly effective against a tank as the bullets are powerful. Four people with two pistols will ruin a tank, as I once found out during a pisstake that turned into a slaughterfest. The tank lasted about 10 seconds, and it didn't manage to hit us once.

Range means everything. Every weapon in the game has a certain range or situation where they're really effective or borderline useless.

I could probably sit here all day and give good and bad expamples for every weapon.

As good as melee weapons are at point blank range.. Nothing beats a shotguns power. Unless they start making 30 foot long melee weapons.

For me the only thing melee weapons are good for is being the guy infront, killing close common stragglers, clearing 'myself' off from a horde/boomer and killing a close charger. But then again, shotguns can do the same, but with a lot more range and speed. Because bullets move fast then feet...

I won't lie, I'd go for a shotgun over melee any day. XD

If this were a debate over melee vs shotguns, shotguns would win no doubt. But IMO, melee weapons > pistols, sure pistols got the range going on but nothing your primary can't handle. Melee weapons don't need to reload neither.

On a side note, whenever I feel like booking it, auto shotties seem to work the best. Karma Jockeys, Chargers, Hunters can't do much against pure buckshot, only danger would be a Smoker.
