    L4D2 TPG Style?

Me and Shenanigans were just talking about why L4D2 gets so much criticism for being "too competitive" or that the players are "too strict". Then we have CS:S and CS:GO where calls are made and if they aren't followed, players are warn, kicked, or banned. Hasn't that always been what TPG is all about? Getting the team to work together in the most effective way possible and having a blast doing it?

If I were to join the CS:GO server and join Terrorist side and sit in the back of the map with my AWP trying to get picks, I would be punished by an admin for not following the call. Hey, sometimes getting picks with the AWP is an effective strategy....sometimes. But it is proven that if you rush with your team and follow the call, you are more likely to win the round.

For some reason when people join L4D2, they think they can just do things pointlessly. They don't want to be told what to do or how to do it. They think we are being "too strict" when we make a call or tell a person where to use the Boomer. Is it any different then telling a person to go with Top3 down Banana as a decoy? No, it's not.

There is a rhyme and reason to every single thing you do in L4D2. The game was meant to be played where the team coordinates attacks and works together as Survivors to kill the SI. This isn't Call of Duty where you can just rush ahead and forget about your teammates or attack by yourself with the Hunter. That doesn't work. That is not being an elite asshole, that is stating the facts. Does Ira get labeled an "asshole" for asking a player in CSGO, "Wtf are you doing, follow the call"? No, that is being a good teamplayer and making sure everyone in the server is doing what they are supposed to do. That is TPG.

But still players blame the reason why they don't play this game anymore is because there are assholes playing, "it got to competitive", or "people want to play "their" way". I never once made a big deal about a call I disagreed with in CS:S or GO or any game that required a call. If I disagreed, I'd voice my opinion or try to understand what the caller was trying to accomplish. By doing that I learned the logic behind the call. The same exact concept applies to L4D2.

There is a proven, successful way to play the game. Yes, there are different variations that can be discussed, but some people make it seem that the players who have been playing this game for over 1000 hours just don't know what the fuck they are talking about. And they, time and time again, want to question and play "victim" when they can't follow the call correctly.

Oh well I guess. My opinion, the players that truly enjoy this game are the ones still playing. Don't blame the reason you don't play L4D2 on any other bullshit. If you really enjoyed this game, you'd be playing it every night with the rest of us. I don't see this anymore on our servers because obviously the people who think this way don't play anymore, but I wanted to ask the initial question of what is the difference between a game like CS:S and L4D2? Aren't they both extremely competitive and strict in their nature? Are we not supposed to enforce teamplay at TPG? Or should we just allow people to do what ever they want without any regards to what is best for the team?

And don't tell me it wasn't like that in the beginning. Don't tell me everyone was relaxed and just played the game with no calls or strategy. I remember playing with Thorsen, Smoken, Lefty, Ira, Krom, or any of the OG L4D2 players and taking shit for not doing things correctly or not following the call. And there is nothing wrong with that. That is how you learn just like in Counter Strike or any teamplay related game. If you are unwilling to learn and want to be stubborn, of course you will hate the game and think the players playing are assholes. But if you are willing to learn and open to suggestions and actually listen to what the caller is saying, then I guarantee you will have a blast playing.

Wanted to vent that, because I truly believe it is a valid point.

    Re: L4D2 TPG Style?

Well said. CSS was my first game I played on TPG and I got kicked the first map I played for not following a call and then giving and excuse about watching flank. I figured out quickly that it wasn't just another pub and I really liked it. I took the same attitude to L4D2 when I started playing that. Like all new players, I made a lot of mistakes and took a lot of shit. I tried my best to lean, not give excuses and to not be a burden to my team. However, I was also shocked by some of the stuff that I saw where not only were people not kicked or banned, but they seemed honestly annoyed that anyone would even criticize them.

One of my biggest pet-peeves is people that ALWAYS have an excuse for not hitting with the team on SI and not clearing or sticking with the team on SV. When you keep telling everyone that it's not your fault, you start to believe it and then you never get any better.

I don't think that it's being "too serious" or competitive to expect people who fuck up to admit it or at least not argue when called out and to also expect new players and vets alike to be constantly trying to learn, improve, and to welcome feedback without a fragile ego getting in the way.

    rant mode off.

Just like in any other game at TPG you are required to follow the instructions of who is leading the team.
    Son calls Dad a fag.
Dad says dude I bust a nut in yo mother 4 times a week

A post like this from the opposing perspective would get you guys in here to argue then locked, cause the poster shouldn't have brought it up. Yet this thread will remain unlocked. Funny how that works.

Thank you for your input Adre. It has really added something to the discussion.

I tried to make it as clear as possible the perspective of the majority of people who still play this game. Please, please share with us your opposing perspective. I would like to know what pushed you away from this game in detail. I have seen you post in the past that the game got too competitive, too strict, and also that there were assholes playing. I have argued my stance on all three of those reasons, which in short was that a game like CS:S and GO have the same exact structure, but yet it flourishes and people love when asshats are dealt with for not following the call in those games. But for some reason L4D2 is completely different right?

Seriously, I would like to hear in detail your opposing perspective. I don't want to get into shit throwing contest. This is a discussion of opinions, which is well within the right of posters on this website. If all you want to do is feed the fire and post some stupid comment like, "L4D2...so much drama", then please go ahead and get this thread locked, but if you want to post your opinion and have some solid logic, then please by all means share it with us.

    The opposing perspective being what?

I really would like to hear your thoughts on this. The whole point of the tread is that there's a difference between being an asshole and thinking that people should play to tpg standards. And it's clear that the people that take a more "casual" (ie fuckaround and do whatever they want) stance on the game have a very different perspective of where that line is from some of the more "competitive" folks.

When I started playing, you were one of more senior players who often made calls and lead. I always thought you did a good job making clear, easy to understand calls and I enjoyed playing with you and learned a lot from you in my early days of L4d2. However, it seemed like once I started really getting a solid understanding of the game, you started playing less and calling even less when you did play.

I don't want this to turn into a "why you stopped playing" thread, but I honestly would like to see your thoughts on what blonde and I posted... at least something more than the pile of meaningless shit that that you just dropped.

If you don't have anything to add more than "HA!" then stay out of it. If this turns into a shit slinging match it'll get locked. If someone wants to troll for trolling sake the thread will remain open and someone will take a vacation. This thread has the potential for some drama but it won't be because a troll runs in and drops his load and runs out giggling.

    Re: L4D2 TPG Style?

I would treat it the same if you started it or blonde started it. If you have an issue with the game and how it's played, then lay out reasons why. I have opinions on it and may eventually voice them here... But for now I'm just going to see where this goes. Running in and saying "HA!" as your only statement doesn't progress the dialog in any way, shape or form. This is no different than any thread in the high drama forum and will be treated the same. As long as the topic at hand is being discussed, anyone can state their views.
