Re: Worth it?
Ohhhhh yeahhhh.
Played a solid 3 hours of versus after about 30 minutes each in campaign and scavenge.
The new SIs really help balance out the game compared to L4D. It could be that it's a new game, but I didn't have a single round where the survivors made it to the safe room. We had the survivors make it all the way to the end of DR5 and me and enf wiped them before they could get to the chopper.
Spitter takes care of shiva stacking, charger is an excellent solution to those situations where a smoker just won't be able to pull enough, and jockey... jesus christ, nothing in the game is as fun as grabbing someone and taking them for a ride halfway across the map and forcing their teammates to backtrack to stop you. Or grabbing them and throwing them off a 30 foot ledge. Or grabbing them and parking them in a pool of spit. Or grabbing them and running them right up to your boomer. Or grabbing them and...
New weapons are a lot of fun, too. I still haven't found many reasons to use a melee weapon over pistols in versus, but I'm sure there are some - I just like dual pistols more. Autoshotties don't feel anywhere near as blatantly overpowered as they once were - whether that's because ammo is much more limited, or because it seems the CIs are somewhat tougher, I don't know. The variety offered by the M16/AK47/SCAR is just awesome, and makes choosing weapons a little more in-depth. The M16 has the highest rate of fire, but lowest damage; the AK47 has great stopping power, but its accuracy is weak and magazine is tiny; the SCAR has the biggest magazine, but fires in 3-round bursts. Personally, I'm in love with the SCAR and prefer to every other weapon... though because ammo does seem to be a little more scarce in L4D2, I've been using my dualies a LOT.
It also seems Valve decided to correct their "oversight" of making the game a little too easy for survivors in L4D. The new SIs and combos that they represent can produce a ton of damage VERY quickly - when you're boomed, it's almost completely impossible to see a spit pool, and it's very easy to get boomed and lose upwards of 60 health from the spit pool you couldn't see. The AED seems more like a campaign tool than a versus tool, simply because if you lose someone in versus, you probably aren't gonna have a lot of time to fix it - I'd rather carry a medkit around. Adrenaline is definitely a great choice between pills, since the ability to run through a horde is immeasurably powerful - it's especially good if you're trying to get those last dozen yards after the rest of your team is screwed.
Yeah, L4D2 is better than L4D in most every way I can think of. Even the effects like flames look better.
