L4D2 Problems

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to see if anyone knows a fix for a problem I'm having.

Since the latest patch, L4D2 has been giving me an error on launch along the lines of 'game is currently unavailable.'
So I figure, no big deal, I'll just reinstall.
I tried to delete the local content, and in the games library, L4D2's status has been listed as 'download paused' for about an hour now, since I tried to delete it.
I got the game on disk, so I tried to reinstall from the disk, but then I got a 'the steam servers are too busy to handle your request.' error, which seemed odd on a Monday when everyone is at work. Especially since I've tried this several times spaced over a couple hours.

And I haven't been having any problems with any other Source games.

Current OS: XP

Please help, I really want to be able to play Left 4 Dead 2 again...

Hmmm...

"Game is not available", for me, means that either my game closed incorrectly and a process is still running in the background, or my internet is acting up. The game server thing, idk what causes that. The new update was being screwy with my game I had to reinstall, but it worked fine for me. I'm assuming you've rebooted steam? Maybe you could go to the folder and delete it from there.

Tried rebooting steam several times, tried a few complete reboots.

I guess I'll go try to delete the files themselves, will that remove it from my library entirely?

It should completely remove the game, unless theres other files I'm not aware of, but even then it'll know to reinstall.

Try deleting the clientregistry.blob file in your steam install folder.

Deleting this file seems like a cure-all for every bug steam-related.

edit: And then restart steam. It will update then should be good to go.

Tried out both of your solutions to no avail. I am seriously getting worried now.

I sometimes get this, is it with all steam games or just L4D2. If its with only L4D2 you have to wait it out. I got this with DoD before. Reinstalling did nothing same as rebooting. After a couple of days it just started working again. I think it has something to do with valve. So my advice is wait a couple of days.

But see, the problem is it WON'T reinstall, it's not that a reinstall isn't helping, it's that the reinstall feature is actually broken.

If you want a sliver of hope, you could try reformatting your hard drive. Now I actually think that has a fine chance of working, but...the question is whether you're willing to go that far. Do you have your important stuff backed up?
