Cheesy Protoss multiplayer tactic
So there's a common Protoss tactic out currently that results in taking you out very early into the game. Typical StarCraft multiplayer, where he who attacks soonest wins.
This one involves bringing a probe to the enemy base, building a pylon, building a turret and letting nature take it's course. This happens before the other team even has any attacking troops out, generally, if they don't know it is coming.
I've not tried it myself, cuz I think it is completely dirt-ass. However, I think it essentially involves sending your drone out, meanwhile as soon as you get the cash, you build a Forge (before ever thinking about building a warpgate). By the time the probe reaches the base, the forge is finished warping. If it isn't you stash your probe behind a rock (unless the enemy's eye is glued to the minimap, odds are good he won't see it). As soon as it's built, you put a pylon up just outside of their sight range. Then put up your turret. The turret will start killing your drones/scvs like mad, and likely take out the barracks (if you've started one yet) or Spawning pool. What marines or zerglings you pop out will be picked off one by one (or 2 by 2 in the zerg's case).
This is actually harder to defend against for Zerg than by Terrans, but not by much. People who use this tactic have practiced it down to a science, and can generally get it up before you have time to react.
The one thing I've found to do to counter is to know it's coming. Get the layout of your base from preview map before the game starts, if you're lucky enough to have choke points, mark where that point is. As soon as the game starts, put all your SCV's but one to mining, and move the other to the choke point. As SOON as you hit 150, plug the choke with a barracks. Then pop out another scv or 2.. If that probe comes in before your barracks are build, interrupt the build and have your scv chase the fucker around. Snag all but 2 of your scvs to take down anything they try to warp in (if it's a pylon, you'll not kill it before it warps, but you'll take it out shortly after). leave one of the other 2 mining and have the third go finish the barracks (chances are you'll be very close anyway). Start pumping out marines and take your base back. Soon as the threat is gone, get your scvs back to work and get bunkers build at teh choke ASAP.
From there you might have a chance at surviving.
Zerg... well.. no idea.. chances are your creep won't be near the choke.
Protoss defending against this will likely build too slow, as they'll have to warp a pylon close to the choke before plugging it with a warpgate or forge.
I think this tactic is deplorable, but comp gamers love this kind of shit, so if you're doing the 1v1 stuff, be ready for it. You're gonna see it.

Scout early, scout often. Zerg shouldn't have an excuse, not with an Overlord... and even if they do get in, they can't reach your hatchery because of creep. Just focus on staying alive, pop a nydus worm into their base, and win the game. If he's spending money on cannons, he isn't spending it on an army, and he won't have more than a couple of cannons at his base at most. Terran can just lift off and move somewhere else. Protoss is in a tight spot, but a couple cannons of your own can keep him from getting too close. You can use your own workers to destroy any pylons the enemy probe puts down. Once you get some fighting units, focus on killing the probe. Until then, a few workers can quite easily destroy pylons before they finish warping in. He'll respond by warping in more pylons, but that's alright - it's buying you time.

I play mostly Protoss on 1v1s and this shit has been tried so many times on me. It's simple to counter, their base will be easy to scout because they're busy building a forge instead of army. As soon as I see that forge I take a probe and circle my base several times, by the time I see the cannon going up I'll have one or two zealots taking down the pylon. Unpowered cannon is useless cannon. Pretty much won after that, because players like that rely on single unit wins. Then just bring up what army you have next to their base and aggravate them some. They'll have no choice but to mass cannons on their front entrance and turtle. After that feel free to expand to the rich minerals, quickly tech to air units and shove them up his arse for trying something so ridiculous. Oh and you'll always tech faster to air units because you will have more expansions and not have wasted all your resources on silly things like cannons.
The only disappointing part is that it doesn't provide much of a challenge, and it doesn't help practice strats against real players.Last edited by LuckyDucky; 08-08-10 at 02:07 PM.

yea i've seen this happen to one of my teammates. couldnt really help him out but i decided i could try for a revenge kill and quick rushed him with what zealots i had and took out all of his resource gathering units then took out his base so he was useless to his teammates aswell.

block your !@#$ing entrance. it's called a cannon rush. there's also the gateway rush that works just as well

Re: Cheesy Protoss multiplayer tactic
Just pull some workers off mining to kill the pylon while its building or force a cancel. Once you get up some units, they lose any chance of a proxy cannon/gateway. If you can't get to it in time, then switch to a 1 base play and either plan to drop/nydus/etc. into the opponents base asap to wreck their defenseless base or build something capable of busting through 2 cannons (banelings/marauders/1 immortal/ etc.). Remember, they are spending a lot of minerals very early on this contain. It will set them back a very significant amount, so just be calm since they aren't going to be teching or anything else soon.
