Purple checkers
Ok im trying to play left 4 dead without updating it cause its using too much of the internet allowance. ive managed to sort the engine error and everything runs fine till i go on single player and the missions and character images are purple and black and when it does load the loading screen has the characters names but the background is purple and black and then it just stops loading and responding. ive authenticated my version of the game through steam. but when i try to play it off the desktop it tries to update it. Now would this issue be sorted if i updated it? Thanks in advance

It is possible that doing an update would fix it. However, you could still have display issues after you are done. The checkerboard video usually means there is a texture/s missing. Have you tried setting your video options to the lowest setting and see if it makes a difference?

That problem is generally caused by confused shaders in the Source engine, most of the time alt+tabbing out of the game, or restarting it helps. Seeing as you've done that, it might be an issue with the fact that you've started updating l4d but never finished (or so i'm assuming, considering that you mentioned it starts updating if you run it through the desktop). The way Steam patches games is on-the-go, it replaces whatever it downloads rather than running an "installer", this means that an unfinished patch can potentially mess up your game.
The only way to fix this without using up bandwidth is reinstalling the game from a retail copy, provided you have one. Otherwise, you're in a rut and I would just slowly let it update.
