Re: New Blood
Elk,
Welcome to the madness! In fact IMHO TF2 is one, if not the most, tactically demanding game hosted at TTP. Each of the classes is balanced, has strengths and weaknesses and forces the team to work together to achieve the goal.
A suggestion, early on focus on one or two class types to get a feel for the game. I would suggest the following: when your team is on offense or you are playing offense on a cp (control point) map try Soldier or Medic; when your team is on defense or you are playing defense on a cp map try Engineer or Medic possibly Heavy. Early on I would avoid playing Spy and Demoman.
Some basic tips:
Soldier: remember that you only have 4 rockets loaded-reload frequently; aim at their feet and lead your target-the rocket takes a while to get there; when you get in close switch to your shotgun-your rockets can and will kill you if they explode too close to you; practice rocket jumping-crtl+space jump as you fire a rocket at your feet and remember you can still fire while in the air.
Engineer: your goal is to setup a Sentry gun, dispenser and teleporters to help your team defend a point or choke point. Demomen are your sworn enemy-if you see one call for help. Same goes for Spys-try not to be still behind your gun keep checking your back and whack or shoot anyone who comes near your gun, and I mean anyone! When setting up a gun you hit 4 then 1 and you will be carrying a blueprint of the gun which can be placed on the ground by right clicking, you can also left click to rotate the turret before placement. Set your gun so it covers a specific area, when holding the blueprint you will notice an additional shading to the background-this shows you the range of your gun. Place your gun in an area which gives it some cover. In general at the start of the game the following should be you setup-1. immediately after spawn drop a teleport entrance (4, 3) right outside your spawn, run back inside and get more metal at the cabinet in spawn, 2. head out with the team and set your dispenser (ask people will help tell you where to setup ie which point etc) then run and get metal from a near by ammo box and then drop your gun. Hammering on the gun or any other building with your wrench will build it faster, and so long as you have metal it will repair any building. The hitbox on your sentry is very large, crouching behind it while hammering with your wrench provides alot of cover.
Medic - pretty simple really use your medigun to heal people at all times and talk to your meditarget and id threats to you and him. Its really his job to keep you alive, you shouldn't be fighting you should be keeping him alive. Keep an I on his health and tell him to pull back if he is taking too much damage. In options before you login to a specific server there is an option which allows you to keep your medigun tied to a teammate without keeping right click held down-use that it makes playing Medic much easier. Keep moving and watch for crits, as medic you are faster than all the other classes other than Scout. If you have built up an Uber charge watch your health, if you are taking damage use the Uber regardless of if you are in the prime location or not, its better to use it than loose it.
Key strokes to remember:
crtl+space allows you to jump higher and get places you otherwise wouldn't be able to.
q - quickswitch between weapons - unlike BF2 you can switch back and forth very quickly between say your rocket launcher and shotgun as soldier.
Anyway welcome to the madness!

Due to the way the minigun spreads, you could be getting head shots, I'm assuming the minigun can get head shots, I'm not sure. But the pistol and sniper both say crit when you hit someone in the head, probably the smg as well.
