It was hypothesized, that's about it.

Valve just said that we would gain access to more blueprints as time goes on, which has proven true. But it hasn't really mattered much.
No ones really going to make anything besides the hats anyway, well maybe the new weapons but really its a waste because you'll get them eventually.

Yes, it is incredibly inefficient to make a weapon since you need to use 4 more weapons just to create a slot token, and another 4 weapons (from the same class you WANT) to make a class token. Everybody has all the old weapons, and the new ones are easy enough to get through achievements, or just idling for a few days. No reason to craft ANY weapon.

And speaking of class tokens... apparently the gunboats don't work toward a class token (I'm guessing). I now have (all extras) 3 gunboats, 1 buff banner, and 1 direct hit... and using any combination of 4 of those, I cannot get a soldier class token. WTF.

Also with the damn spy watches (both of them) not working to make scrap metal, of course I have about 6 of each.

    From the wiki:
Creating scrap metal requires three primary, secondary, or melee weapons. Since invisibility watches don't fall into any of these three categories, they cannot be crafted to form scrap metal. However, invisibility watches can be crafted to form a Spy class token, or a PDA2 slot token.

The "Smelt Class Weapons" recipe requires a primary weapon, a secondary weapon, and a melee weapon. As such, it is impossible to use this recipe to combine Spy, Sniper, or Demoman weapons, because none of these classes have unlockable weapons in all 3 slots that they can use to smelt:
The Sniper does not have an unlockable melee weapon. The Razorback and Jarate are both secondary weapons.
The Spy does not have an unlockable secondary or melee weapon.
The Demoman does not have an unlockable secondary weapon.

Also, you might craft a weapon of a specific class if you need it to complete a Class Token. Other than that, then yes its pointless to craft another weapon.

Have we confirmed that you either can or cannot select the hat you create?

That's a wiki, made by normal users observing the same inconsistencies you and I are (and making their own unproven conclusions). I highly doubt their "explanation." I suspect the inability to make scrap metal from either spy watch was a shortsight that will be fixed shortly by valve.

EDIT: Found an email from Robin on SPUF confirming it will be fixed.

For 2 hat -> 1 hat (which is a stupid idea), it's been proven. Plenty of videos on SPUF of idiots wasting all their hats.

I haven't heard a direct report of somebody making a class hat yet, but I will be doing it very soon. I seriously doubt, from the description, that you get to choose a hat.

    From the 12/22 update:

You can now rebuild class and slot tokens:

    Class 1 token + Class 2 item = Class 2 token
    Slot 1 token + Slot 2 item = Slot 2 token

Thank god, I can finally get my soldier token now!

Followup: confirmed! Crafted 4x refined + soldier token, had no choice which hat I got, but I got the Tyrant's Helm, which was of course exactly what I wanted! :9 :9 :9

    Re: Crafting - Blueprints discussion

I tossed four primary weapons into the box to craft a slot token, but it told me I didn't know the blueprints. I can see the slot token blueprints in the little list, but I can't select them. Do I have to wait until I find them like an item, or was my menu just acting up?

    What were the 4 weapons?
