Thread: Map Voting

I just had an idea to better spur voting, but wanted to get a discussion going before throwing up a poll.

Right now LS randomly picks maps to put into mapvotes and RTV (if no maps are nominated). In a lot of cases that Ive witnessed, the same maps get chosen (dustbowl, goldrush, etc...) because people just choose what everyone else is choosing. Its almost like a popularity contest when you see the way people vote.

Im looking to change it up a bit. Get in some maps that havent been played in a while or that often.

Here are two different ideas:

1. Have LS categorize the maps as 5CP, CTF, PL, Push/Pull, etc... and then have the mapvote come up with each one of those categories with a random map chosen from each. So that way you get a nice variety of the different modes the maps have to offer.

2. Blind voting for all votes. No longer will people mindlessly choose what everyone else is choosing, but rather chose the map that THEY want to play next. Countdown still shows, but the results of the next map dont show up that baby hits 0.

What other suggestions do yall have? Or why would you want rtv to stay the same?

Im just curious how the rest of the community feels. Ill put up a vote once we get some great ideas/points.

You're talking about the mapvote in general, not the RTV function.
If no one RTVs, that's what happens if I recall.
I really think the server should allow for nominations without people having to RTV to do so.

Make the number 5 or 6 option "Extend". I think people have, for years, hit "1" during a vote and accidentally extended the map.

Blind voting sounds like a good idea, as for one thing, I'd like it if we chose a map from one game mode instead of nominating maps. Cause we'll always choose the same 3 options. Always.

The only thing I don't like about blind voting is that you can't revote for your second preference in a "lesser of two evils" or tie-breaker situation. For instance, if goldrush, upward, and badlands are up for a map vote, and I voted for badlands but it has no chance of winning while goldrush and upward are 8 to 8 in votes, and I decide I would rather play upward than goldrush, with blind voting I would never know that my revote could swing the tide to the map I favor more. I have done this before when the map I originally chose has no chance of winning but my second and last choice are tied up- not just in personal preference cases, but for maintaining server population as well. Maybe this goes against the idea of pure voting, but then is the revote option is only there for if you mistakenly hit the wrong button? On top of that, you might make a mistake and not know what you voted for- yes you could just do a revote to be sure but I feel that not knowing what you voted for would be annoying. Just some concerns I have with this proposal- I'm not really convinced that the hive mentality is prevalent enough for blind voting to be a necessary change, especially with what I consider to be negative aspects of it.
As for the mixing of 5 CP, PL, etc, I think that might be a good idea, not really sure.
