Haphazard while I agree with your synopsis of 6vs6 as the best way to play tf2 (despite not participating in the lobby myself anymore) this is more in regards to the TPG servers which will never have 6vs6 etc. so it's a little OT.

Gabe has openly said that tf2 is a game they're using for experiments, they don't really care about making the game good nearly as much as they care about trying new marketing strategies and experiments. For example when they made tf2 2.50, they were testing to see how the market responded more than anything, same with the whole hats and mann co. store system. They could really give a shit about competitive/general game play.

    Re: get the...

Ah yes, the error of creating forum posts at 4am having been drinking for many hours and not reading all the posts. I assumed from the first few posts that the thread was an indictment of the game as a whole rather than simply this server. I would say, however, that my post is not entirely irrelevant.

For those complaining that TF2 is not serious enough, or that it is not a skill based game, I would argue that splitting your time between the 6v6 version and the TPG version of the game might be the way to go, rather than writing off the game entirely. Speaking of which, I think i played a game with Cprice just the other day in which he let me die many horrible deaths. Also speaking of which, how come you don't play lobbies anymore ooze? I have just started to get back into them if you want to take them up again.

To get back on topic though, I am willing to forgive a lot when it comes to the cosmetics of the game, so long as the gameplay is still there. The addition of hats, while somewhat against TF2's original art style, is not inconsistent with the cartoony nature of the game. It also allows you to differentiate the players, which is helpful as a medic so I know who to prioritize. The coloring thing starts to move in the wrong direction, however, and the unusual effects are frankly terrible. I would be fine with their inclusion in the game if there was simply a client-side option to turn them off. I really hope they do not implement coloring of weapons as has been requested on SPUF, but if I had to guess I'd say colored weapons aren't too far off.

As far as the actual weapons go, I agree with earlier posts here that say the default weapons are often the best anyways. Sure when new weapons are released you see them fairly often, but as people learn to counter them those weapons fade away. Sadly the demoknight has hung around (curse all you demoknights out there!) I am very hopeful that this newest round of beta-testing will be the new standard for valve. Actually letting the betatesters play with the weapons for an extended period before deciding to keep them.

GAY! Why not just test that on Alien Swarm or something. After all wasn't Alien Swarm just some type of test game thing anyways?

Pretty much any game is fun in a structured league type environment so that doesnt really say anything about the quality of tf2 now. Yes its more serious in 6v6 but anything is more serious when you are investing time and league money into it.

The 6v6 community has had to constantly ban weapons and implement rule changes more and more because of direction valve is taking this. Its fun in 6v6 in spite of valve's new updates, rather than because of them. It seems like everytime a big update happens some kind of weird weapon comes out that comp players have to waste time on discussing and banning because its either OP or just not fun.

I just feel this direction valve is taking is just not improving the game from either competitive or pub standpoint.

QFT, also interesting that your conclusion is self-evident when valve hasn't spent any time improving game play, mechanics, modes or maps; but instead relied mostly on cosmetic updates (most of which they didn't even create) and watered down versions of possible new weapons (designing effects weaker rather than stronger, at least at first). The 'direction' they are taking this game is toward a more muddled and diffuse version of a game, taking the solid, well balanced gameplay of the original and muddying it up with confusing half-ass weapons, silly game modes like castled whatever, and every other misguided 'improvement' and 'update' they've recently introduced.

My hope is they will focus on gameplay and new CP maps (CP being the best mode for teamplay) in the future and even a vanilla mode or something like tf2 lobby built into the game; this is the sort of thing I'd like to see and without it TF2 very well won't survive let a lone thrive with the new wave of awesome games (brink anyone) coming down the pike. Personally, this may be the end of TF2 because if it's still a sort of mess that it is now and BRINK was out I'd be spending my time improving on that game is what I'd think; we'll see how the gameplay is in comparison but BRINK looks like it may be the TF2 killer.

I hope youre not right, but I have an inkling that you might be on to something...

Sadly as much as Valve says they thrive off the community, its still a business and is treated as such (enter Mann Co. Store). Its simple supply and demand Im sure with the amount of additional money being spent on the game in the store and people pining for any update, regardless of the quality of the content... I feel that they might be getting a little comfortable sitting where they are on the food chain and might need a wake-up call of another good game taking away customers for them to realize what they should be focusing on. For the game's sake, lets hope its not too late by that point.

Yep, that was the video I was referencing. After watching that it's pretty clear they care more about testing the market and seeing how it responds with tf2 than building a real game. They care to an extent, because they know that if they keep the community happy that will keep the game going and get more people into it, making more money, but with tf2 3 years old now I'm sure they've given up the idea of putting more effort into game play changes to build interest, and moving more towards getting money off existing customers with the mann co economy and testing to see how the players respond. They still care about the competitive and pub communities imo, but only to a certain extent. And I agree with coors that they have ruined the game with the direction they have taken it, both in the 6v6 format and pubs. It's a shame, but looking at it from their perspective I have a little bit of respect now, at least.

Also, for the record Haphazard I was roamer in that lobby so your deaths weren't my responsibility

And imo brink is just going to be another cod17/borderlands with a gay movement system thats going to exploited to the point where its unplayable vs other people. It may kill tf2 but with portal 2 coming out I doubt valve cares that much.
