So you have volunteered to be a captain in a TPG DOD:S pickup game. Here are some tips and tricks to get you started.
1. Volunteer early - Hopefully you have volunteered before Sunday at 9pm CST. If you have not, well good luck to you read the rules and hang on. If you did volunteer before the PuG, download the maps here. All of them, start your own local DOD server with the map you are going to lead a team on an get to know it, go with your instincts try to figure out the plan that gives your team the best chance to win. Strategy, however, will only get you so far, even the best strategies require a team to execute them.
2. Build a Complete Team - When choosing players try to get one person of every class. The corollary to this is...
3. Know the Community - Know what players can do what. it is imperative to completing the mission that you be aware of who you need to get it done.
4. Skill trumps everything - Do not draft a team based on anything but what you need to complete the mission. Don't pick someone because you like them, unless you want to get rolled because the other guy probably is not so nice. Draft the most skilled players first, the preverbal Jack of All trades (having the achievement is orthogonal to actually being a jack of all trades btw).
5. Beware the new people - New players are there for a reason, to grow the community, but also because they are solid team players who can be assets to your team.
6. Listen to your team, especially the oldtimers - Your team is not window decoration, you need them (a lot more than they need you in some cases). A good team leader listens to his team, when adjusting strategy and making calls, or picking players do your best to listen to good ideas. OTOH be aware that this shit ain't a democracy be prepared to put your foot down, but always be looking to find the right balance.
7. If it is your first time don't sweat it - If it is your first time playing captain and you get rolled, oh well, learn what you can from your first time and do not get discouraged. You only fail if you do not learn anything from your failures.Last edited by Guyver; 10-02-12 at 03:06 AM.

Re: Tips for new PuG Captains
Depends on what you are meaning rules..... First and foremost rule in any competetive play is NO CHEATING........ but if your asking like class restrictions or limits on map timings things like that, OGL or old CAL rules for weapons are a team of 3 or 6 players with weapons limited to 1 assualt, 2 supports, 3 rirfles, 1 sniper, 1 rocket, 1 mg, with a thirty minute map cycle with each side playing both sides of a map, for a total time of a one hour match. point scoring is calulated as follows 50 points for every cap out plus your accumilated 5 second duration points. Team with highest score at the end of the match after adding both sides together is the winner.

I understand the class restrictions in places like here, but what's the point in competitive play? Either you pick a good mix and do well or you don't. Either you find out what the enemy team is using and pick classes to counter, or you don't. I've never noticed any class being necessarily overpowered.

Re: Tips for new PuG Captains
I would imagine it keeps teams from using just one class as a whole and makes it interesting forcing players to gain skill with more than just 1 or 2 weapons. That, and it also forces people to become more role players than running off with a weapon of choice by one's self.

Also makes people listen to strategy and make a plan (most of the time) instead of running and gunning, People travel in groups, work together, and trust eachother to watch their back while the other calls anyone out. Running the same route, adapting that plan, and thinking on the fly on an unfamiliar map, all make for a good training exercise.

I might add to this, "glance at the stats page for DOD at TTP and know the top players".
